Matooke is a traditional meal in Uganda. This comes from the Matooke plant which bears fruit that later grows and develops into a bunch of matooke with many different fruits attached together. They are peeled and they have a yellowish look on the inside though on the outside they are green when raw and when they ripen they turn a yellowish color.
It can be eaten boiled though it is mainly cooked in banana leaves and then squashed to make a a smashed form of it which is left to simmer in the banana leaves and later with other sauces like groundnut paste, chicken soup etc. This is staple food in central and western Uganda. It is eaten daily but also cooked on special occasions with other foods as it is liked by many people.
Matooke has been used to develop other products like matooke flour where the matooke is dried and then ground to make flour which can be used to make porridge as it is amazing. Matooke is also exported abroad because many Ugandans in the diaspora miss it so much so like to have though it is sold expensively abroad.
