My Day Trip

Hello, my steemit family. Greetings to all who love to learn by traveling. I will share with you some interesting information from my daily trip. Sometimes interesting questions come to mind. Where is the middle of the world? Where is the middle of the city you live in? as. In today's conditions, these may be easy to calculate, but centuries ago...
I will tell you about the middle of the city where I live, which was also included in the historical records centuries ago.

The picture you see in the photo below is of the Şehzadebaşı mosque. Its architect is Mimar Sinan, the greatest architect of all time. The şehzedebaşı mosque, which he modestly calls his apprenticeship work, has many features, but we will not dwell on the sehzadebaşı mosque.

Location

The place we will talk about is the marble green column located at the corner of the courtyard wall of the mosque facing the street. This place is marked as the center of Istanbul even on the map.

Middle of Istanbul
The area surrounded by walls, known as the historical peninsula, used to be known as Istanbul. The famous traveler Evliya Çelebi, while describing the talismanic stones in Istanbul in the first volume of his book Seyahatname, mentions that Mimar Sinan made measurements from inside the city walls and determined that this was the middle of Istanbul and placed this stone there.

In another narration, it is mentioned that there was a sign showing that that point was the "middle of Istanbul" during the Byzantine period. Architect Sinan placed a green column on this sign, which was adjacent to the courtyard wall while the mosque was being built.

Thus, Sinan revised a pre-existing sign. However, he did not include an inscription describing the function of this column. In the past, the marble column, which was placed on iron shafts above and below, was rotating. The column has lost its rotational function due to the raising of the road level. What I'm going to tell you ends here, if you have a historical sign like this in your city, please write it in the comments. Stay well, see you soon.
