Earlier last week, Ukraine launched a major offensive in western Russia's Kursk region with hundreds of thousands of troops. Oleksandr Sirsky, the top commander of Ukraine, claimed to occupy an area of 1000 square kilometers of Russian territory after starting this attack across the border.
Russia started military operations in Ukraine in 2022. Since then, the offensive inside the country has been hailed as the biggest battlefield success for Kiev so far. Ukraine, which has received the continuous support of Western countries, was cornered by the Russian campaign for so long.
The Russian Defense Ministry said that an attack by Ukrainian troops was repelled in some villages 26 to 28 kilometers from the border.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the Kiev forces have detained Russian troops. Ukrainian soldiers captured by Russian forces may be released in exchange for their release.
Zelensky also said, "Despite tough and intense fighting, our forces continue to advance in the Kursk region." Along with that, the number of captured Russian soldiers is also increasing. 74 settlements in Kursk are now under the control of Ukraine.
