Taiwan, killing 9 and injuring more than 1,000
On Wednesday morning, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck off the east coast of Taiwan, the strongest to hit the island in 25 years.
The quake left at least nine people dead, nearly 900 injured, and caused damage to roads and buildings, including the collapse of more than two dozen apartment towers.
Over 50 aftershocks followed the initial quake, with one reaching a magnitude of 6.5.
The earthquake was centered southwest of Hualien City and triggered a tsunami warning for southern Japan and the Philippines, which was later lifted.
The quake was felt across Taiwan and even as far as Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Xiamen in China.
The situation in Taiwan is still evolving, and search and rescue efforts are ongoing to locate and assist those who may still be trapped in the rubble.
