Extreme rains have hit several areas in Aceh, Indonesia, and caused puddles in several points on the highway. Although there have been no reports of flooding, the weather conditions in the last few days must be a concern for the public, especially those traveling home for Eid.
Floods have inundated Lhokseumawe City and the Medan - Banda Aceh road in the Panggoi and Blang Pulo areas, Muara Satu District, Lhokseumawe, Thursday (3/27/2025). The height of the puddles reached around 45 centimeters, although in the morning it had started to recede because the rain had stopped.
The Medan - Banda Aceh road must be a serious concern for all parties because it is an inter-city and inter-provincial route passed by travelers. Puddles of water due to heavy rain not only hinder travel, but endanger the safety of road users.
This condition is even more dangerous because there are currently many potholes on the Medan - Banda Aceh road. These severe potholes have claimed lives, even several times. One of them, a mother who got stuck not far from the Lhokseumawe Police. Stuck in a hole that was not visible because of the puddle of water, the mother fell and unfortunately for her, a truck was driving at high speed and ran over the mother.
In the last few weeks, several of these potholes have begun to be repaired. Unfortunately, the repairs to the holes in the road have not been very neat. There are uneven parts between the patch and the base asphalt. This condition actually makes vehicles not glide smoothly on the asphalt. It seems that the repairs were just patched together.
The district/city governments and police in Aceh—and in other areas throughout Indonesia—have provided homecoming facilities in the middle of the road. The police have emphasized that travelers can leave their vehicles at the police headquarters so that they feel safer. Rest posts and rest areas have been built at every strategic point. Travelers should be able to make good use of them for safety.
The Director of Traffic for the Aceh Police, Senior Commissioner M Iqbal Alqudusy, explained that there are 40 points of damaged roads spread across a number of districts and cities in Aceh. Related agencies and contractors should conduct socialization and install sufficient warning signs on the road before drivers encounter damaged road points.
Data from the National Police Traffic Corps details that the number of victims who died on the highway in 2024 was 27,000 people or died eight times more than the previous year. It is truly sad because the number of victims who died on the road is relatively greater than the number of victims of war or disease outbreaks.
Hopefully, travelers and all parties are aware of the dangers on the highway. Thorough preparation before traveling is very important. Hopefully there will be no more victims on the highway during the homecoming period and beyond.[]
