A horrific mass shooting in Birmingham, Alabama, has left four people dead and dozens injured. The incident unfolded late Saturday night in the city's Five Points South district, a vibrant area known for its nightlife.
"Multiple shooters fired multiple shots into a group of people," reported Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
Authorities discovered the bodies of two men and a woman on the scene. A fourth victim has passed away due to their injuries at UAB Hospital.
Authorities are currently conducting an investigation, and detectives are trying to find out if the shooters approached the victims on foot or fired from a vehicle. Up to this point, no arrests have taken place.
Mr. Fitzgerald remarked, "This tragedy emphasizes the cultural factors that contribute to these mass shootings." Mayor Randall Woodfin's words this week ring truer than ever. We're seeing far too many disputes settled with bullets."
Hospitals across the city received a surge of injured victims, with eight transported via Birmingham Fire and Rescue and several arriving at various medical centers. Of those injured, at least four are in critical condition.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital confirmed they are treating ten victims.
"The people who were affected were in a public space when the gunfire started," Mr. Fitzgerald explained. Investigators suspect the use of Glock switches, illegal firearm attachments that effectively convert pistols into automatic weapons.
This disturbing incident comes amidst a recent federal crackdown on these devices within Birmingham.
Witness Dajon Singleton described the scene as terrifying, recounting, "There were screams and people crying everywhere."
Birmingham Police urge anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777. Additionally, they've requested surveillance footage from businesses in the area and any relevant information from the public.
The tragedy in Five Points South serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence on communities nationwide.
