Introduction

History, they say, is the story of past events. These past events, called history, are an interface between the past and the future. As humans, we have gone through or witnessed many events in life. Still, there are times we feel and wish we were present at a particular event. Our motive for such thoughts varies. And here, I also wish, too, I'd participated in one of the biggest events that makes my country Nigeria.

1. Explain why you want to witness that historical event.

The event I wish I was there is the independence of Nigeria from the British. That was a great event in the history of my country, Nigeria, which I, as a historian, felt I should've witnessed. If not live, I should have followed it live from media houses. Or if it was in the era of social media like we have today.

The reason I wished I had been there is that I wanted to see how the transition was and how the declaration was made. I wanted to know the feelings the locals had seeing themselves having their self-rule. I wished I knew how they felt on that October 1, 1960.

2. How did that event affect the world or society today?

That singular even made Nigeria an independent entity, ruling its people and having or taking their decisions. It is through that self-rule (independence) that gave birth to the military coup d'état and military rule in my Nigeria. The Nigerian Civil War from 1967-1970 emanated from that; corruption, and all sorts of evil came as a result of self-rule.

3. If you could be there, what would you do or say?

I wouldn't have said much, but I would ask the Nigerian patriots who fought for independence from the British their real intentions and motives for desiring self-rule. I would have asked them to show or tell us (Nigerians) the way out of all our troubles and possible ways to salvage the nation.

I would have asked them what their intentions were about our natural resources and their management. How they intended to run the economy of the country and also run their government before the ill event of the January 1966 coup and the sudden overthrow of the government by the military merely 5 years after independence.
