Bike servicing

Servicing a bike at home can help keep it in top condition and save on repair costs. Here's a step-by-step guide to bike servicing:

1. Gather Necessary Tools

Allen keys (hex wrenches)

Screwdrivers

Chain cleaner or degreaser

Lubricant

Tire pump

Cleaning brushes and rags

Bike stand (optional but useful)

2. Clean the Bike

Wash the bike: Use mild soap and water with a sponge to clean the frame, handlebars, and wheels. Avoid spraying water directly into bearings.

Dry thoroughly: Wipe the bike with a clean, dry cloth to prevent rust.

3. Inspect the Tires

Check tire pressure: Inflate the tires to the recommended PSI (printed on the tire's sidewall).

Inspect for damage: Lok for cracks, punctures, or worn tread. Replace if necessary.

Check alignment: Ensure wheels spin frely without wobbling.

4. Clean and Lubricate the Chain

Clean the chain: Use a chain cleaning tool or a brush with degreaser to remove dirt.

Lubricate: Apply bike-specific lubricant to the chain while pedaling backward. Wipe off excess to prevent dirt buildup.

5. Check Brakes

Inspect brake pads: Ensure they're not worn out. Replace if they are less than 1mm thick.

Adjust tension: Tighten or loosen the brake cable using the barrel adjuster or Allen keys for smooth operation.

Test brakes: Ensure they stop the bike effectively and don't rub against the rim or rotor.

6. Inspect and Adjust Gears

Check derailleur alignment: Ensure the derailleur is straight and shifts smoothly between gears.

Adjust gear cables: Use the barrel adjuster or screws on the derailleur to fine-tune gear shifting.

Lubricate: Apply a small amount of lube to moving parts of the derailleur.

7. Check Bearings

Headset: Ensure the handlebars turn smoothly without resistance

looseness.

Bottom bracket: Pedal to check for creaks or resistance.

Wheel hubs: Spin the wheels to check for smooth rotation.

8. Tighten All Bolts

Check and tighten bolts on the stem, seat post, pedals, and crank arms. Use a torque wrench if possible to avoid overtightening.

9. Inspect the Saddle

Adjust height: Ensure the seat is at a comfortable height.

Tighten clamps: Check that saddle is secure and doesn’t tilt or move.

10. Final Safety Check

Spin the wheels to ensure they are true (straight).

Test ride to confirm smooth braking, shifting, and overall operation.
