At Itam Market, a paint bucket of garri is sold for One thousand two hundred Naira (N1,200) and the same is sold in other market locations within the city.
What is Garri?
Garri is a West African Food Processed from Cassava into grains that can be eaten in a variety of ways. Garri can be consumed raw by adding a few items like water, milk, or sugar to it, it can also be eaten as eba(A combination of garri or cassava flour with hot water).

Aniema Selling garri to buyer
“I have been in this garri business for some years now, and I must tell you that this increase in garri price this time is double of what we have experienced before now”
Mrs.Nsikakabasi selling garri
Mrs. Nsikakabasi, who is also using garri business to support her family, laments how the high cost of garri has made her, not to be able to buy enough quantity of garri to sell the high price.
A further survey carried out at Itu Market proves that almost all the garri sellers are having the same issue in terms of high cost of garri.
“The increase of garri price is really affecting us the sellers too, not just the buyers. Once the buyers are complaining about the high cost, it is also affecting us too, some days, I come to the market and I don’t sell, and that’s so hard for us, we have a family to feed.”
When inquired from the garri sellers about what could be the reason for the sudden garri increase, the sellers expressed themselves.
“Farmers did not plant cassava last year, just a few farmers engaged in the planting of cassava last year and it is affecting people now because we have a shortage.” -Nse
Due to Farmers' low activities in planting Cassava last year, citizens are suffering the consequences now as a result of little availability of garri. Most buyers have already made up their minds to manage the high cost of garri and also have a positive hope that the price will still come down in the future.
