President Muhamadu Buhari has described the deadly explosion at an illegal refinery In Imo State, Nigeria last weekend as a national disaster, the death toll is climbing with officials seeing at least 112 people mostly youths died during the blast which occurred on Friday 22nd April,2022.

Charred human remains, burnt beyond recognition, some burnt to ashes, vehicles raised to the ground. Fragments of belongings littered the areas. It’s indeed a gory site to be old. Cries filled the air as viewers where searching for their relatives who might have died during the blast.

This is all that is left an overwhelming fire ripped through an illegal refinery at a basin for arresting the ohaji baba local government Area Of Imo State Nigeria.


A day after the blast, relatives of the dead victims have been scarred through the Wreckage, but the scene is nothing to write home about.

With grief, residents of the Area blamed the Federal Government Of Nigeria, they say It has refused to create an enabling environment for those over 112 who lost their lives in the unfortunate incident.

“People are in problem, we are all suffering, look at my Elder sister is gone just like that. If the government do their job properly, this incident wouldn’t have happened.
I got a call last night to come here in other to identify which one is my sister. I am from Obinze here in Imo State. In as much as we all blame illegal practice, I would so much blame the government for not creating Jobs for the youth and yet, they are embezzling our Natural resources Money, will they bring my younger sister back?” I cannot even recognize my sister at again because she has been burnt into Ashes, it’s very painful"

The area of the blast is reported to be famous for all oil theft, a menace which the Government says it’s causing it to lose over two Hundred thousand barrels of oil per day to all thieves.

Members of the Community say it is high time the government intensified efforts to avoid recurrence.

“I think, the Government of Imo State and the Federal Government of Nigeria Should step up to stop this illegal refinery because it has claimed several lives and properties from our land.”- Mazi Ejiogu (Youth Leader)

While decrying the impact of the tragedy, Governor Hope Uzodinma who is the governor of Imo State appealed to the people to disease from illegal oil refining, saying it is a sabotage of the Country’s Economy, and people must be law-abiding citizens.

Although it is still unclear what caused the explosion, the owner of the refinery who is currently on the run has been declared wanted by the authorities and a Mass burial has been arranged for the victims of the explosion.

My condolences for the death of a many person in an illegal oil refinery, may the family be given courage.

And I'm also sorry for the death of your sister who was one of those who died at the oil refinery.

Hopefully it will be resolved quickly by the government properly and wisely.🥺

Thanks bro. I didnt say my sister, it's a statement from one of the deceased brother, he was complaining how bitter the situation was.

Hopefully the governent would do something about it.

This type of incident happens almost every year since we have much oil zones where people could easily carry out illegal practice like this.
