Hi guys, It's another weekend with SteemTV Show....
Today's edition of SteemTV focuses on "effects of culture/tradition".I spoke with @lhorgic today on the show. Unfortunately, our network signal wasn't friendly and so the sound of the video is bad, but I did something else, I hope you will like it.
Background
What a world it'd have been without culture, tradition and norms. If you're already unable to conceive such imagination, we are on the same page.
I've come to realize that culture is an essential part of who we are and how we see the future.
Culture is multifaceted and it involves values, traditions, customs, and beliefs that are particular to a group of people or society.
Culture has its way of bringing people together, a lot of people have a sense of belonging because they have shared values and traditions.
Culture promotes social cohesion and reduces conflicts. For example, Muslims and Christians have celebrations typical of their culture and this helps the people to come together to enjoy similar experiences.
The Yorubas in Nigeria, have a way of greeting, while the younger ones bow, kneel or bend their knees to greet their elders, creating a sense of familiarity and it shows respect between individuals.
Various aspects where culture can be perceived include but are not limited to:
- Language and communication
- Religion and beliefs
- Food and cuisine
- Art and literature
- Dress and grooming
The truth is if all of us on the steemit platform should be asked about their different cultures on the above aspects, time and space won't allow it because there will be different and very interesting opinions and inputs. That automatically brings us to a very important sup topic:
Cultural diversity
Everyone will agree that the uniqueness of culture is in its diversity. There are unique customs, traditions and beliefs particularly associated with a particular society.
Sometimes, what seems like a taboo in one locality is a sacred and very acceptable norm in another society, which makes it interesting, right?
To make our program this week very engaging, you might choose to drop in the comment section a popular and interesting culture in your area.
It might be related to any of the 5 (five) points listed earlier in this article. Apart from me, I am sure most users will want to learn about that interesting culture in your society.
I also believe that cultural diversities increase our exposure and experiences to new perspectives. Our way of thinking is particularly shaped, there is an increase in tolerance and respect for other cultures.
It is also very sad to note that, these same diversities can lead to conflicts and misunderstandings most times because people fail to understand and appreciate the differences between cultures
Interaction with lhorgic
Join me as I display the first two questions I asked @lhorgic during the live Interview
Me: How have these cultural beliefs influenced the behaviours of people in society?
lhorgic: The behaviour of people toward this is countered by acceptance or rejection. Some of these traditions and cultures thrived in the older generation but seem not to be very relevant in this age. Hence the gradual fading out of these beliefs as it's being rejected by the younger generation.
Me:How has civilization affected impacted the way you personally view some cultures or cultural beliefs and norms in your society?
lhorgic: Civilization has played a huge role in this regard. In the sense that it gradually brought some subtle consciousness of the fact that these things, we have held dear for a long time as culture or tradition are irrelevant, especially in this new age. In my opinion, civilization is just like an eye-opener.
Me: What advice can you give to billions around the world that are still enslaved to cultural beliefs and norms?
lhorgic: My advice to people around the world is that they should be careful how they subscribe to cultural beliefs and traditions they don't have an idea about or understand. Some of these things are not really relevant even today. It will interest you to know that some of these beliefs stemmed from people's personal opinions and bias which are subject to error as we are human.
I hope you've enjoyed our show today 😊. If you want to know more about SteemTV do pop along and listen in.

Culture is the way of life, how we dress, food we eat and the meaning we attached to a particular symbol, Our culture different from one and others. For example thumb up means OK in some culture while in other culture means something else. Thanks for this dear friend
