Hi guys, It's another weekend with SteemTV Show....

Today's edition of SteemTV focuses on one of the @worldsmile projects in Nigeria which is "the installation of Steem solar " and the student's reactions after learning the installation process.

On Wednesday 26th April 2023, a few students from Government Technical College, Uyo were so grateful to learn how important solar energy is and also how to install a solar photovoltaic system.

It is important to note that the heat and radiant energy that is emitted from the sun can be converted into renewable solar energy. It is expensive to install, but it is preferable because of its low cost of maintenance, there are many other benefits which I will later talk about. I will always recommend this to people who are looking for a real sustainable power source.

Burning fossils to generate electricity is not a good idea for the future, not even now. The reason is that while carrying out this process, a lot of carbon dioxide is emitted constantly. The question now is, would that be friendly to health?

No should be the answer. That means solar energy is the only sustainable power solution without any health hazards in this regard.

Get to know solar energy

Solar energy is powered by sunlight. In this process, the energy from the sunlight is collected through photovoltaic (PV) cells which turn sunlight into renewable electricity. That’s why we love sunlight!

Source

The components we used for this installation include the following:

  • 250watts Solar panel/PV module
  • 60A MPPT Charge controller
  • 12v 220Ah Battery
  • 3.5KVA Inverter
  • 100Ah Knife switch

Solar panel/PV module

These are sets of cells that are connected together to produce an electric power system directly from the sunlight.

While mounting this, I used just one student and their electrical teacher while others were just observing and learning, I did this because of the limited number of ladders to climb up. The connections were done in parallel.

While mounting the panels

Charge controller

This component is used to regulate battery charging and also discharging. The solar charge controllers regulate voltage and current from the solar array, charges the battery, prevent the battery from overcharging and also perform control over-discharge.

This component can indicate when no energy is coming from the solar panels when there is an open circuit, If the charging speed is slow, or when the battery is not connected.

Don't be confused by the wire coming out from the flush socket, it is not connected to the socket. That wire is coming from the panels to the charge controller.

The battery

The battery is one of the most important components in a solar energy system. It helps in storing energy that is produced from the solar array for usage when sunlight is not available, It is much appreciated at night, on cloudy days, and on rainy days.

For this installation, we used two 12v 220Ah batteries. The batteries were connected in series in other to give 24v output, this is because our inverter is 24v. Whereas, If It was to be connected in parallel, it would have given 12v output which would not power the inverter.

3.5KVA Inverter

This was another important component we used. And the main function of this component is to convert the direct current(DC) from the solar arrays and battery to alternating current(AC) power which can now be used for the loads.

Knife-switch

This switch is used to control the flow of electricity in a circuit, in other words, you can use it to change the source of power.

No doubt, after reading this article, I believe you may likely be thinking of installing solar PV at your home. Just before I leave, I'll like you to know the few benefits of installing a solar energy system at your home if you can afford one.

Here are some of the benefits:

  • It is a clean source of electricity that can serve many electrical purposes and it is reliable
  • It doesn't cost much to maintenance
  • It is a renewable source of energy, you don't have to buy anything to keep it working after installation
  • It does not cause any type of pollution

I hope you've enjoyed our show today 😊. If you want to know more about SteemTV do pop along and listen in.
