SHARE YOUR UNDERSTANDING ON CITIZENSHIP

Citizenship is simply the relationship between an individual and a state or country. The person who has this relationship enjoys certain rights and privileges.

The rights do not end at just getting what we receive from the government. It goes both ways, which means we have responsibilities as citizens to perform.

HOW CAN ONE BECOME A CITIZEN OF A COUNTRY? EXPLAIN ONE WAY

One of the ways of becoming a citizen of a country is by birth.

This usually happens when a child is given birth to in a country. That child automatically will be certified to be a citizen.

Some countries have requirements to be met even before their baby can become a citizen.

Countries including the United States of America, New Zealand, Mexico, etc., are countries with citizenship by birth.

EXPLAIN THREE DUTIES OF A CITIZEN

The duties of a citizen are simple yet can be overlooked. So, let’s quickly look at just three of them today:

🔺Voting: Voting is actually a right, not even a privilege. A right automatically interprets to mean a duty or a responsibility.

In Nigeria, for instance, anyone who is mandated into power anyone they choose to have as their leader in that office.

Voting is one duty that shouldn’t be joked with. That notwithstanding, most people shy away from voting, or deliberately refuse to vote because of different reasons.
In all, voting is one of the vital duties of a responsible citizen.

🔺Obeying laws: Obedience to the law is one that comes with a reward, either good or bad. In a democratic state or country like Nigeria, we have the freedom of speech. But even when we have the liberty to air our views, we have to adherer to the constitution of the country.

If we refuse to keep to that, then that right can be taken away temporarily with a means of discipline to correct the wrong.
With this, obedience is dutiful.

🔺Volunteering: Volunteering is another duty that can easily be overlooked. It is so little, yet very impactful.

Good and responsible citizens can volunteer in helping the government to publicise what social responsibility is, and so on.

There are voluntary groups that can also emerge to help the government grow better.
For example, I am a member of the Girls’ Brigade, Nigeria.

This organisation although international, can also help in educating the female citizens of the country on their rights, and afford them different and resourceful opportunities on different platforms.

Duties can vary depending on whether we’re looking at civic duties, social responsibility duties, national duties among others.
But either of these tells us we all have duties to perform as citizens of any given country.
