What is the up/downvote etiquette on Steemit?

I see that people can see how people voted on posts and I think I have yet to see a down vote on someone's post. Does the Steemit community use down votes much more sparingly than say, Reddit? Will people be mad I already down voted some posts without commenting before I saw how few there are?

Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

  • Disagreement on rewards
  • Fraud or plagiarism
  • Hate speech or trolling
  • Miscategorized content or spam
