Dennis Diderot expresses his regret by saying "I wish I hadn't bought the dressing gown that my friend gave me".So why did he regret a dressing gown given as a gift? Was it a gift he didn't want or from someone he didn't want?
Both were not the cause. After Diderot received a new gift, the other things in his room started to look old and he soon bought things that he thought were compatible with each other. He made his first comment on consumerism and unconscious shopping, saying "I changed all things because of one thing I bought".

When we buy new shoes under the clothes we have been wearing for a while, the fact that the shoes are new makes our clothes look old and in need of renewal. We buy a new pair of trousers as the part close to the shoe, and almost every time we buy a pair of trousers, we buy a top.

Maybe Diderot wasn't a consumerist. However, he wrote down this example from his own life, and this psychological and sociological effect, which emerged as a result of scientific research inspired by this event, was called the Diderot Effect.
