Its all about the Change

The value of life lies not in the length of days, but in the use, we make of them; a man may live long, yet get little from life.
Whether you find satisfaction in life depends not on your tale of years, but your will.

-MONTAIGNE, Essays

Lately, I have come to see life as though looking through a looking glass. There are ups and downs. Doors close on one side, new ones open. If no doors open, take the open window, as our elders always said. But I get my lessons from what I have read and from other people’s experiences.

Let me tell you a story of a man. When you see him, it is like life has no meaning, no purpose. He has children; he has his home, land in abundance and many properties. But he is poor, at heart, in spirit and mind.
Every day he wakes up, he says a prayer. He has his breakfast, then wills his day to pass until it is time for lunch. He then wills his day away till he has his dinner. He says a prayer; then he goes to bed. This is his routine Monday to Monday, 6 am to 11 pm, January to December for six years.

“I have grown old,” he says, “far too old to chase after another life. I have lived and enjoyed my life, let me wait till it is my time to go.”

His wife always watches from the side. Each day shaking her head in misery; she has lived this life. She took a big sacrifice to raise the family they both desperately desired. And now she too has to wait. What for, we don’t know.
The days continued to pass, the wife crying silent tears every day. She was tied down with nowhere else to go. This is the life she accepted to live, and now it is her penance. Maybe, He would be kind enough to take her first; apart from raising children, it was a wasted life.

But like a thief in the night, he stole away. The change came when she least expected it. Trapped on this ship, the wife had to steer it, their family into safety. The waters became turbulent. It was hard to sail; the storms were never-ending.

‘I cannot fail. I have to be strong. I cannot fail' the mantra playing over and over again in mind.

It took a while, but at last, they made a safe landing. The skies are blue, so blue; the wife had never seen anything like it in decades. She had no idea the strength she possessed, but it showed itself, with the grace she walked onto the shore. She missed the stable soft ground, and now she was able to feel it once again.

Life is a struggle for many who have had to experience unexpected changes in their lives and their families. Just because one has lost his will to live; does not mean that we take that will upon ourselves. You have to fight to keep on living.
