Always Be My Maybe

Always Be My Maybe does a good job balancing rom-com tropes and accurately portraying Asian American culture. Everyone knows that Sasha Tran, played by Ali Wong, and Marcus Kim, played by Randall Park, are going to get together at the end, but the conflict was well-developed and hilarious, especially with the addition of Keanu Reeves as a haughty and presumptuous star. Marcus's fear of leaving the familiar and reaching for the unknown is nicely set up by his dependence on his dad, living in his childhood bedroom, and his unwillingness to switch where his band performed. It wasn't surprising that he was afraid to move to New York with Sasha when she needed to return. All the characters experience growth and change throughout the movie, which always makes the movie more satisfying and meaningful. Sasha realized the value of revisiting what was once familiar, and Marcus was finally able to leave the familiar and take a chance.

Overall, this was a well-executed film and I definitely recommend it.
