Besought
(Original poem by Bharathiyar)
Why build an exquisite veena1,
Only to be heedlessly cast-off into dust?
Tell me O! Sivasakthi2 –
You, (who) created me with a scintillating mind
Grant me fortitude
To devote my life in welfare of this State
Tell me O! Sivasakthi – Would you let me
Become a burden to this land?
Like the velocity of a rolling ball
Grant me a body in tandem motion with the speed of thought,
Unblemished heart I seek,
Eternally rejuvenating brilliant life, I seek,
Even as my flesh(body) scorches –
I ask for a soul that sings praise of Sivasakthi!
Steadfast mind I beseech –
In bestowing these, do you have any demurral?
1 – Veena is an ancient Indian string-instrument
2 – Sivasakthi “Sakthi” means power or energy. Sivasakthi is an avathar of Parvathi who is Lord Siva’s wife, according to Hindu mythology.
