Hi steemians,
As far as childhood stories go, I can only remember one story whenever I hear of this topic.
‘’the story of the tortoise and the hare’’; continues to dwell in my mind like I was told just yesterday.
I can still remember vividly how my grandfather gathered his grandchildren to tell us this story when he came visiting.
I was a little over 9 years old when my grandfather told us this story and since then it has been my favorite story.
The story goes like this,
In the animal kingdom, the hare admired himself so much that he always challenged the other slower animals into racing competitions because he knew that he will always win.
Winning made him feel superior to the others.
Anytime he challenged someone into a race he would win and right after winning
he would go on
praising himself saying ‘’he is so fast’’.
The other animals did not like what he was doing because he made them look inferior whenever they were together.
So they wanted to teach him a lesson so that he would stop bragging about his speed always.
As they were speaking, here came Mr turtle, when Mr turtle heard what they were talking about he boldly said he wanted to race the hare.
The other animals begun laughing and told Mr turtle that even the fastest animals in the kingdom have not been able to beat the hare in any race. They advised him not to go on with his plans but he was determined to race the hare; he wanted to prove them wrong.
So Mr turtle went up to the hare and challenged him to a race.
When he challenged the turtle to the race he laughed so hard that the whole forest heard him laughing but the turtle held on to his belief and never backed down.
The hare then accepted his challenge.
So the race was set up for the next day.
The d-day came and all the other animals gathered at the racing tracks to witness the race between them.
Mr turtle arrived at the venue first. They waited for a very long time before the hare arrived for the race.
The hare arrived with his usual character of overconfidence.
The race then begun. when the race started, the hare run as fast as he can past the turtle and had given Mr turtle a very huge gap.
Half way into the race the hare stopped and raised his head but did not see any sign of the turtle, so he decided to take a little nap; saying to himself that when he wakes up he will continue the race cause he had given Mr turtle a huge gap.
The hare slept for a very long time, as he was sleeping Mr turtle came and passed by him quietly without the hare noticing cause he was in deep sleep.
When the hare woke up he looked around and saw no sign of Mr turtle.
So he taught he was still far behind, with his confidence he stood up and continued the race.
When the hare was about reaching the finish line, he saw the turtle making his way to the finish line too. In shock he tried to run as fast as he could past the turtle but it was too late Mr turtle had already crossed the finished line.
The other animals were so happy because finally someone had beaten the hare and he would stop bragging about being the fastest animal in the kingdom.
I can still remember how happy I was when Mr turtle won the race. I run to my mother who was in the kitchen and narrated the same story to her. My grandfather’s story made me the happiest in the house that day.
Never overlook others because you have been gifted with a great talent, rather use it to help others.
Pride does not help anyone but rather leaves us too confident.
Mr turtle did not beat the hare in this race because he was faster than him, he beat him because he took the race seriously whilst the hare undermined him and did not take the race seriously.
My appreciation goes to @belenguerra, @writingsnreviews , and @steemcurator01 @fendit for their continues support.
Thank you for reading my story.
