Main Story

Ally is a student at New York University in 2001, and she lives with her detective father, Neil, who the New York City Police Department employs. Tyler Hawkins is a part-time student at New York Campus who also works at the university bookshop part-time. Even though Charles is a successful businessman, he finds it difficult to get along with his sister Caroline. Tyler and Aidan are taken into custody by Neil after being embroiled in another person's altercation one night in their apartment.

Aidan calls Charles to secure Tyler's release, but he does not discuss the situation with his father. In the parking lot, Aidan notices Neil dropping off Ally and immediately recognises her as his daughter. When he approaches Tyler, his primary goal is to get Tyler to sleep with him so that he may exact vengeance on the detective. Despite this, Tyler and Ally continue to socialise and remain close friends.

Ally is informed of Tyler's brother Michael's suicide after Michael is inspired to commit suicide after seeing a Michael tattoo on his breast. Following Ally's discovery of Tyler's mother being robbed and tragically shot as a child, Tyler informs her about Michael's whereabouts and fate. Aidan makes an excellent first impression on Ally as he arrives at Tyler's house for the first time. He persuades Ally to go to a party, where she binges on alcohol. Following an altercation with her father the night before, Ally goes to Tyler's place the following day, where the two finally consummate their romance.

Tyler's father has been invited to an art exhibition starring Caroline, a rising artist in the community. Many people are disappointed when Tyler fails to arrive, and Tyler confronts his father in the boardroom due to his failure to appear. Kevin is accused of deliberately distancing himself from his children to prevent the pain of another child's death, which Tyler believes to be true. During their journey on the train, Tyler is approached by Neil's partner, prompting Tyler to disclose how he met Ally to a bewildered Ally, who is in tears. Aidan meets with Ally's father to express his regrets following Tyler's declaration of love for him.

A piece of Caroline's hair is chopped off during her birthday party due to taunts from her peers. In Tyler's apartment, Ally and Aidan visit Tyler's mother, Caroline, weeping uncontrollably. Tyler erupts in fury when he and his sister return to school, and he finds up in jail as a result of more mockery. Tyler wins Charles overdue to Tyler sticking up for his sister, and the two become good friends due to their shared experience. A meeting with the attorneys at Charles' office has been scheduled for Tyler and his team.

In their time together, Tyler and Ally clarify that they are entirely committed to one another. The following day, Charles calls Tyler to apologise for being late since he had to drop Caroline off at school. Tyler accepts Charles's apology. Charlie's concern for Tyler's daughter is acknowledged by Tyler, who then informs Charles that he will meet with him in his office. Tyler, Michael, and Caroline are shown in a slideshow on Charles' computer when they were younger. Caroline walks into her classroom and finds the date and time scrawled on the board in chalk: "Today is Monday, April 1st." Tyler may be seen looking out the window of his father's workplace on the WTC's dating back to Nine-Eleven 2001, as attacks on the World Trade Center are about to begin.

Tyler's diary entries reveal that he has always admired and forgiven Michael for having committed suicide himself. Tyler was put to rest at the cemetery where Michael was buried. Caroline and Charles appear to have a solid father-daughter bond some years after the events of the film. Meanwhile, Ally boards a train at the precise spot of her mother's assassination, where she will meet up with her father. Aidan is doing well in school, and he has a tattoo of Tyler's name on his forearm.
