History of Faisal Mosque
Faisal is a mosque located in Islamabad, Pakistan. It is the fifth largest mosque in the world and the largest in South Asia at the foot of Margalla Hill in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. The mosque has a modern design with eight sides of a concrete shell and is inspired by the design of a typical Bedouin tent.
A major tourist attraction in Pakistan, the mosque is a modern and influential piece of Islamic architecture. Construction of the mosque began in 1976 with a 28 28 million grant from Saudi King Faisal, after whom the mosque is named. The unconventional design of Turkish architect Vedat Daloke was chosen after an international competition. Without the typical dome, the mosque is shaped like a Bedouin tent, surrounded by four 260-foot (79 m) minarets. The design features eight-sided shell-shaped sloping ceilings with a triangular worship hall that can accommodate 10,000 worshipers.
The combined structure covers an area of 33 acres (130,000 m2 ؛ 1,400,000 square feet); The mosque is dominated by the landscape of Islamabad. It is located at the northern end of Faisal Avenue, which lies at the northern end of the city and at the foot of Margalla Hills in the westernmost foothills of the Himalayas. It is located on the ground against the beautiful backdrop of the national park. The Faisal Mosque was the largest mosque in the world from 1986 to 1993, when it was overtaken by mosques in Saudi Arabia. Faisal Masjid is now the fifth largest mosque in the world in terms of capacity
