Fortune At Dusk

The rains drizzled steadily, it has been raining for 7 days straight. The type they call 7days rain thought to be superstitious, but maybe these things sometimes have an iota of truth in them Mercy thought within herself as she continued breaking the melon shell she held firmly in her hands.

Brother Seun brought quite a handful of the melon seeds from his last trip to Ife, he said they were very cheap over there and would not stop talking about the goodness of Ife town to all and sundry who gave him a listening ear.

"Guess how much i got these for?" he would begin...

"Heii !!" Mercy wimped out a cry as she slapped briskly against an enormous mosquito perching on her left lap, before muttering something out of rage.

The neighbourhood was a water logged area, so it's no news that mosquitoes and other flying insects paraded the environment all day long, tearing fleshes and having a sumptuous meal.

"These melon must give me luck o, i must have sales"

Packing them into a stainless tray, she blew out any debris that might be stucked within the white soft melon then poured them into a medium-sized transparent rubber and balanced it on her head, she will hawk along the neighbourhood first before heading to the week day market.

Brother Seun sold 4 big measuring cup for her at a very affordable price. So she was going to make alot of profit from the sales then maybe get enough money for Tito's tuition fee.

Tito was Mercy's second and only child. She lost her first born due to a strange illness, that was what the traditional healer said. That the cause of such an illness could not be ascertained.

Life broke out in pieces for Mercy after her husband, Tito's father absconded to be with his mistress in another town, since then she has lived in misery, gradually picking up the pieces of her life with anything she laid her hands on.

"Sales seems very bad, today she cried" but did not give up, she kept hawking the wares beckoning on passersby to patronize her white soft melon.

"Come buy, i go sell am well well for you, she assured"

... It was getting dark already and even more shocking that not even a single person has bought from her.

She found an old shade, put down her wares, as she massaged her weary legs with hot tears streaming down her bulky eyes.

Suddenly it was as if someone whispered her name, she turned almost immediately.

"Who are you?" Mercy questioned

"It is i your customer" A shimmering looking lady with skin of milk echoed.

"But i have never met you before, i know my customers too well"

"Trust me ! I want to buy your fresh melon but you must help me"

"My HELP?? , Mercy laughed away in scorn, what help can a wretch like me offer to anyone?"

"You can help me, i need you to bring me something i lost, it is a letter, i think i dropped it somewhere at the junction"

"Mercy stared blank at this mysterious lady at this dark hour of the night, and wondered why she couldn't get her stuff herself, how about my wares?"

"They are safe with me, just go, PLEASE"

Probably frustrated from an unproductive day, Mercy decided to give this mysterious lady what she wants so that she can buy some melon as promised, she set out to get the letter.

Mercy walked very fast, squinting her eyes for any letter as it was now dark already except for the stars that glittered .

She finally saw a brown enveloped wrapped with a ribbon and headed back.

Reaching the spot, Mercy was awed , the mysterious lady was no where to be found, her white fresh melon rubber was empty of melon but..... **FILLED TO THE BRIM WITH WARDS OF NAIRA NOTES**

She was scared, opening the brown envelope she found a white paper with scribblings on it and read out:

TODAY IS YOUR LUCKY DAY MERCY, THANK YOU FOR HELPING A DESPERATE CUSTOMER.

Mercy paused for a second, and then as if she was being remote-controlled picked up her rubber of money and ran home • • •

The End.

You have said it all.
It may seem all tough, but the rewards lies at the end.

Thanks for your review, and welldone, i know it is not easy for you and your team going through a lot of entries.

Warm regards.

TODAY IS YOUR LUCKY DAY MERCY, THANK YOU FOR HELPING A DESPERATE CUSTOMER.

Indeed it was her lucky day what a wonderful story loaded with lots of moral lessons. Thanks @sikan-eyen for the invite

Yes dear, thank you, hoping for your entry, you seem extra busy these days.

Had she not accepted to offer that help to the stranger, Mercy wouldnt have recieved such a surprise or assistance perse, but because she was willing to assist and also humble enough to do that, she was rewarded.

Lessons?

  • Good attitude pays.
  • Humility is a key to Success.
  • Hard work will always lead to Success.

There are actually many other lessons, but i just spotted this ones for now.

Thank you for sharing such an interesting story with great meaning.

Thank you too for taking time out to highlight the morals of this story, 'fortune at dusk'. You did too well. I appreciate.

If there is anything i have learnt over time in life despite the challenges regardless, it is the fact that hardwork pays. To keep doing what we do both in the sunny and rainy days because definitely a day of rewards is very near, only the determined will cross the finish line.

Besides being nice and humble as you have said is a virtue to uphold.

There you go..., Thats right.

I am happy for mercy, a miracle at a desperate hour. Thank you for sharing this short piece it was enjoyable reading.

Truly a miracle at a desperate hour as you caption, thank you friend i am glad you had a nice read, enjoy your day !
