In his book Minerals, George Agricola, a 16th-century German scientist, described a vehicle that ran on wooden poles. He was pulled by horses. In 1790, a similar horse-drawn carriage was driven to Britain to haul coal. But it ran on iron rails. In 1804, Richard Tray de Thak, an English engineer, developed a steam engine. But it could only weigh twenty tons. Then George Stephenson built a more powerful engine. After the successful test of this engine, a railway track was laid from Stockton to Darlington on which only freight trains were operated. The railway line from Liverpool to Manchester was inaugurated in 1830 and the first passenger train in Britain ran on the same railway line. This was followed by trains in the United States in 1833, Belgium and Germany in 1835, Canada in 1836, France in 1837, the Netherlands and Italy in 1839.
