Last year, I participated in a knowledge-measuring competition organized by the Sri Lankan Broadcasting Corporation. The prize for the winner was a three-day aircraft trip to Africa. As I was the winner of the tournament, I got free hotel, transportation, and meals for three days. However, the second winner received only an airplane ticket. As a nature lover, I had always dreamed of exploring Africa’s beautiful landscape, so when the opportunity arose, I couldn’t say no. Therefore, I agreed with other winner to travel to Africa together.
When the moment arrived, we both packed our luggage and embarked on an exciting journey to Africa; as a Sri Lankan, this was my first visit to such a distant continent!
We arrived in Kenya, which was famous for its wildlife. When we stepped off the airport in Kenya, we felt a rush of excitement. Our guide, a cheerful Kenyan called Kofi, greeted us warmly. He first accompanied us on a safari to see the animals. As we came to know that we were going to visit the vast plains of Maasai Mara, we jumped into the sturdy truck quickly.
As we drove across the land, the wind rushed through my hair. Suddenly, Kofi pointed ahead and said quietly, "Look Lions". I was delighted to witness a flock of lions relaxing under a tree in the afternoon sun. My heart raced with excitement, but I kept quiet so as not to disturb their calm.
When we moved forward, I noticed a group of zebras were running in the distance. I spotted the design of the black and white stripes in the tall grass. Not only that, but I watched the giraffe gently stretching its neck to eat leaves from the tallest tree. I pinched my eyes, to know whether I was seeing a film. No, it was not a film, but a true incident.
After the safari, Kofi took us to visit the local Maasai tribe, who welcomed us with a traditional dance and invited us to join them by jumping to the high sky. We were not good dancers, but we imitated them, and when they saw our dance, everyone laughed and cheered.
All of the Maasai people were dressed in bright red clothes and they seemed to be very friendly. They showed us how to make fire with two sticks, which I had never seen in my country. Everything I witnessed in that country astonished me. I adored the Maasai tribe's culture; they were quite united and welcoming. When we departed, they invited us to stay with them for a few more days, but we politely declined and left the place.
On our last day, Kofi surprised us by accompanying us to the beach in Mombasa. I never expected such clear, blue waters in Africa! We swam and played on the sand because it was a really lovely beach to visit. Kofi allowed us to have some spicy African food on the beach, which was so delicious that I had never tasted it in my home country.
The whole journey was filled with a mix of adventure and relaxation. Even though we were only scheduled to stay for three days, we felt that we needed more time to enjoy that lovely country. Even though we thought that Sri Lanka was the only country famous for such a beautiful landscape, we visited more animals, and beautiful landscapes than my home country.
When we flew back to my country, I felt that I never forget this African tour, as it had provided me with unforgettable memories that would last a lifetime.
