Tact Is the Ability to Tell Someone to Go To Hell in Such A Way That They Look Forward To the Trip

in hive-114105 •  5 years ago

This is one of the most amusing sayings by one of the most amusing personalities that have existed in the world, i.e. Winston Churchill. These words are truly powerful, especially considering a world of today where marketing and business require tactics in order to deal with investors and tactics cannot bear fruit without the art of rhetoric.

The Way You Speak What You Speak:

It is said that one of the most prominent feature that a person can hold is the way he carries himself especially in the words he chooses in his speech. There are some people who are able to manipulate speech in their favor and usually politicians and diplomats use this as a way to stay in power and manipulate the masses. Since speech is a tool that is the easiest to use when it comes to making others do as you wish, it is a very dangerous thing. Some people might convey an opinion as norm for them, willingly knowing that it might prove to be disastrous for other person. It becomes difficult to believe what is true and what is not. This idea was also conveyed by Voltaire when he had said that:

“If you can make a man believe in absurdities, you can make him commit atrocities”

Is It always bad to use this approach?

In the end, the poisonous words sugar-coated to attract the masses, results in the loss of those who got manipulated in the first place. Yet, the world today revolves exactly around the people who are good with their words, which might as well be a horrifying nightmare if you get caught in them. Yes, you can always use this approach to avoid greater damage but you should be always direct and truthful to your closed ones.

Excellent point, and your post reminds me of another quote I've seen floating around on social media -

"Words are singularly the most powerful force available to humanity. We can choose to use this force constructively with words of encouragement, or destructively using words of despair. Words have energy and power with the ability to help, to heal, to hinder, to hurt, to harm, to humiliate and to humble." ~ Yehuda Berg

I know that I've always tried to be truthful and direct with people, even when that truth came at a cost. Great food for thought. @bluemist.

Thank you and I can totally relate to that quote you shared.

The ancient Romans taught rhetoric in such a way as to do just what you suggest: appease the masses and get them to do what you want, whether it is correct or not, based in large part on emotion. At our core we are emotional beings, not rational or logical ones, but ones swayed by our base emotions: anger, fear, hunger, etc. It takes a special person to be able to tell someone else that their anger is misplaced, without making them angrier in the process.

Perfectly described, as we are vulnerable beings but we do have to at least try to find balance in between.

The only thing sharper than a mouth that can keep up with a quick mind is a charismatic charm conveyed across an eliminated screen via a keyboard.

This was a fun read, @bluemist—thank you.

Well said and we have to be more cautious about it.

This is why asking for things in writing is so important. Visual signals and speech add two more dimensions of complexity. Don't trust videos, there is way more oppertunity to be decieved or persuaded through tone and stylization of voice, facial expressions, and body language.

That is true, you just have to make sure even make in writing too.

I have found that many people will be willing to flip to your channel if you enlist their help to do something. In this world of anonymity, to be singled out for your help is an ego booster. (For some, not all)

And nobody will ever argue the leverage of a silver tongue. Worth their weight in gold.

Have a great day.

Yes, that is so true and happens exactly like that

Thank you so much for the generous tip.

I am not a Winnie sycophant. He had many faults and failings along with his abilities and strengths. He would not be able to operate in a modern political environment without a lot of re-education and revision of his attitudes and frame of existence. That doesn't stop the things he has been recorded as saying from still being both useful and amusing. I used to carry a little card in my wallet. It sat in there for years and now and again would get an outing to be shared. It was a short saying attributed to Winston Churchill. 'Generally speaking, short words are the best and old words, when short, are the best of all.' I lost the card sometime. I have no idea when or how, but that doesn't matter so much as the words have clearly stuck with me.

I totally get it and it is definitely the most precise way to do things.
