Ulog 185: Venturing Out & Plans To Stock Up

in hive-114105 •  5 years ago

Today is the first day... in I can't remember how long, that I am leaving the homestead. I have spent the last two or three weeks(?) huddled up inside my home working online, getting my homestead and grow room ready for spring sowing, tending to my cannabis plants and clones and planning out my garden; on top of the regular homestead and household chores.

Granted I have walked down to the mailbox, but other than that my life has revolved around not going out in public. And it's not necessarily because of the Corona-Virus; it's because I've had no reason to really leave. Our pantry has been full, we have not needed any household items and I am happy to say we could go another few weeks without buying anything.

But today, I do have an appointment I need to go to.

And since I do have to leave today, I have plans to stop at a few stores along the way and stock up on some things I can foresee us needing over the next month.

I'm not really looking forward to this appointment today. I have another meeting with my attorney for updates and to go over paperwork stemming from my auto collision in 2018. It's not that I don't like attorneys, it's that I don't understand all the legal jargon and I have to meet with him (attorney) to go over the final papers for the lawsuit.

But enough of that, this post is more about how people get anxious, instill fear upon others and why we let them do this.

Granted, I am a prepper (on a small scale) and have supplies on-hand in the event of a catastrophy (whether man-made, natural or financial), but I get so upset when I see the panic-riddled headlines from alleged news' outlets, YouTube videos with the titles declaring calamity is coming and how people just can't control themselves in a panic situation.

Fear Mongering At It's Finest

If you look online you'll see hundreds and hundreds of articles over the last week with people stockpiling and how shelves at grocery stores could start to show emptiness by Mid-April if this virus continues to spread.

To me, most of these articles are spreading fear mongering among the masses of people; this is how the media controls the narrative.

Unless you are living under a rock, you have heard of Supply Chain Effects that are expected to happen; if not already happening.

It was reported just in the last few days how Apple, Nike and Volkswagen, BMW; as well as others are having disruption with their items, production lines and availability. My husband works in a shop and SOME of their molds and parts come from South Korea and China; he gets a little rattled when a truck pulls in and starts unloading these molds for him to work on. But in reality, can you blame him? Or is this another way the media has inflicted upon us their fear-mongering?

He does have an underlying fear that when parts do run out that he may be laid-off or have to figure out what to do financially; which is legit in my mind. But we can't live our lives right now on what-ifs.

Just two weeks ago I ordered some new grow lights for my cannabis and the box was labeled as a product from China. Was I weary of it? I'd be lying if I said no. But I have to remember these lights and their boxes were a one-day ship guarantee from Amazon and have been sitting in a HUGE warehouse locally for perhaps weeks, or months. But again... the media was able to infiltrate my head and tell me to be concerned.

I made up my mind over the weekend to stop allowing the media to fill my head, and live there rent-free, with the way they string along the stories. I know in time, when it becomes a (legit) pandemic concern, we will hear about it. Now, I'm not saying I fully trust the government, but I am giving them the benefit of the doubt... for now.

Until that day arises, I am going about my business here on the homestead. I am continuing as I always do. If I am already heading out to a store, I will stock up on essentials; I refuse to let this early panic determine my day and life. I have no plans to head off to every big box store and start cleaning out the shelves. I have no plans to buy the face masks (even if they were not currently unavailable online for purchase. My understanding is that these masks are made for people who are inflicted with an illness as to not spread to others versus wearing one to prevent the person from getting the illness.
