When you are away

Family reunions are a great way to charge your batteries, have some quality time and catch up with the latest news. When you live away from your family, you miss having them around. After a while you miss even the teasing and the nagging. Being alone, without your family or friends is not always easy. It can take a toll on you.

When you are older, it isn't that easy to make new friends. Some of the past experiences have taught you not to trust others. The fear of being hurt prevents you from keeping an open mind and forging new friendships.

Therefore whenever you meet someone new, your emotional baggage enacts your mistrust. The walls you have built around you are too tall and too thick for others to climb or break down. Even the most determined persons would give up after couple of failed attempts of connecting with you.

Family reunions or reconnecting with your old friends offer you the feeling of a safe environment where you can be yourself and let the guard down.

Being always on defence is not healthy as it drains you out mentally and physically. What needs to change is your perspective. You need to learn to go with the flow and not to have any expectations.

Not every single soul is lucky enough to have a loving family. There are millions of people in this world who do not have any relationship with their family members for one reason or another. No family reunions, no Xmas cards, no holidays together, nothing like that. How do they manage to go on?

Being self reliant helps. Having a open mind and no expectations makes them more sociable. Some of them have the what do I have to lose mentality and thanks to it, they actually manage to meet other people and make new friends.

How and where can you meet people? Go the library, register for a class or a workshop in your area! Pay a visit to the arts museum in your city. Have breakfast or lunch in a restaurant. Go see a movie. Get out of the house and you will get the chance to meet someone.
