PowerHouseCreatives Contest: Gordon Lightfoot’s Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald

in hive-114105 •  5 years ago

My entry to @zord189’s latest contest. The contest is to turn the last song you listened to into a story. Check Here for details.

My favorite thing to watch on the telly is documentaries. Last night there was one on Gordon Lightfoot. He is a well know Canadian songwriter- singer now in his 80’s. With amazing song writing talent and soft melodious voice, he helped mark out the the folk music of the 60’s with such songs as, ‘If I could read your mind,’ Early Morning Rain’ and ‘Sundown.’ His songs have been recorded by many artists all over the world.

The last song I heard was the Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald. The song was written, composed and performed by Lightfoot.

The start of the song;

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they called Gitche Gumee
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy…

Lightfoot tells the true story of the sinking of the bulk carrier SS Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior on November 10, 1975. Twenty-nine men were lost at sea and their bodies never recovered.

The American freighter was fully loaded and bound towards Zug Island, near Detroit, where it was set to discharge its cargo of Iron ore pellets. Afterwards she would normally return to her home port of Cleveland for the winter.

Conditions on the Great Lakes can be treacherous and produce high waves. During such a storm the ship suddenly sank 17 miles from Whitefish Bay. The Captain of ‘The Fitz’ never reported any difficulties. No distress signals were sent.

There were many theories on what caused the fatal sinking of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald freighter and the coast guard’s report was inconclusive, with the most probable cause being the loss of buoyancy and stability resulting from massive flooding of the cargo hold.

In later years, during Live performances, Lightfoot changed some of the words to reflect there had been no crew error involved in the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The original copyright lyrics of the song remains the same.

Thanks for reading my post and I hope you enjoy Lightfoot’s song, The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald.’ It is sad because of the loss of lives but the song helps keep their memory alive.

Lovely music with history, I had heard of the ship but never the song thanks @redheadpei, good luck in the contest.

Thanks Joan and for the good luck wishes. I thought Lightfoot did a great job Writing and singing the song.

It is really pathetic topic Gordon Lightfoot’s Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald.

It is history and because Gordon Lightfoot wrote the song, the tragedy of the 29 men lost would be remembered.

There was a fierce storm but no one really knows what happened to cause the sinking of the cargo freighter.

Great post Jo!! I love that song but it is really sad. I do agree that is a song that pays homage to the lives that were lost. 💖 !tip

Thanks so much Dee and thanks for the tip. Lightfoot’s folk songs were part of my younger years and they always stayed with me. 💗

You're very welcome Jo!! 😊

I love that song! I've got a number of his albums and they're always so much fun to listen to.

Thanks WW @wwwiebe! He has written some great songs and to see him sing it looks like it takes no effort. I enjoyed watching his bio.

Howdy redheapei! I always liked the haunting words and melody of that song. This is a great write up about it!

Thanks Cowboy! I’m happy you liked it. That song is probably Lightfoot’s greatest work.

I remember when the wreck happened @redheadpei, and then later, the arrival of Gordon's song. This song has a great affect on me. I love all of Gordon's songs - what an artist he is - but he's getting up there, and he's had some health issues for a while now, but I hear he's getting around a little better now and still touring at 80!

You did a great job writing about this song! I'm so glad it was the one you'd heard last before this contest!

Thanks @free-reign. Your appreciation means a lot. Lightfoot is getting up in age and after a serious illness there were reports he had passed. After that , at one concert he came out on stage and said. “The rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated.” Lol

For some reason the video was unavailable but I still went on YouTube and looked for it after reading the story behind it and it's a really touching piece - the memory of the crew will live on with this one.

Good luck in the contest!

Thanks Nicky @nickyhavey and for your good luck wishes. 💗 I don’t know why the video didn’t show but glad you saw it anyway. 😊

I agree Jo, Gordon Lightfoot is a fabulous singer and songwriter. What a touching song for men who were lost at sea so long ago. I learned a lot through your post, thank you.
