INTRODUCTION

Greetings to you all famers here! It is interesting to be here to share our ideas when we are presented with the gift of farmland to plant the crop of our choice. If this happens in reality, I would tell you for sure that, would take advantage of the opportunity to boost food production and and make a lot of money from it.

As the host of this contest has required, let me share with you what I would do when I'm given a farmland for free.

Cultivation of Cassava to boost food production

When I meet with the opportunity of being gifted with a large expanse of land, I will use it for cultivation of Cassava. Cassava cultivation requires a large expanse of land to grow well to have a bountiful harvest.

Cassava is a tuber crop that is formed from the root of the Cassava when planted. It grows fine where the soil is rich in nutrients. Its Classification is as follows:

Description and Scientific Classification Of Cassava
Scientific Name:Manihot esculenta
Kingdom:Plantea
Family:euphorbiaceae
Genius:Manihot
Specie:Manihot esculenta

The stem may be up to 4 to 5 meters tall and sometimes, it may be above or below. It has a simple palm and palmately lobes and could be petiolated.

Why I chose Cassava

I chose Cassava because of its economic benefits and then is a source of food to the farmer too. Cassava is a source of starch which are useful for industrial uses. The stems and it tubers generates income for the farmer. When the farmer engages in commercial production, it creates employment in the society.

Maturity Stage of Cassava:
Every year that comes and go, a huge quantity of Cassava is harvested.

After planting which takes place from March, the Cassava starts to grow from at least, three weeks to a month after planting. At the early stages of growth, more of organic and inorganic fertilizers could be added to the soil to boost growth and have heavy tubers. The maturity and harvest starts from one year and above after maturity. The stems from the harvest would be used for the next planting.

Common pests and diseases control

Some of the common pests and diseases control include the following:
Pests:-

  • White flies

  • Cassava mealybugs

  • The Cassava green mit

  • Grasshopper (variegated)

  • Common diseases:-

  • Carla virus

  • Begomo virus

  • Crini virus

  • Ipomo virus

The Control Measures

The following measures are taken to control the diseases and pests:

  • Planting a disease resistant variety

  • Practice crop rotation

  • Apply predatory mites and parasites

  • Plant Cassava early at the beginning of the rain.

  • Remove all infected plants from the farm

  • Practice farm hygiene and monitoring

CONCLUSION

Cassava production is a money spinning Agribusiness venture. When I have a large expanse of land, I would also request for machines for mechanized farming so as to make the cultivation and production more easier. Even though the space you have may not be enough, use it as it could contain. There should be no room for empty space.
