Contest: Opportunities that Agriculture offers us

INTRODUCTION

It would never be wrong to state that Agriculture is the food basket of every nation. This is why the Agric sector should be given adequate attention by all. There are vast empty lands that could be utilized for Agricultital purposes. But even in areas where there are only few available land spaces, such spaces could be used just for family consumption.

In some cases of both commercial and subsistence production, we are not able to consume all that are been produced. What I mean here is that while we consume some part of what we produce, we also take some part of the produce to the market to sell and generate money to buy other things we need.

THE AGRICULTURAL SYSTEM IN NIGERIA

In my country, there vast empty lands waiting to be cultivated. These large farm lands can not be covered by the small farmers who have little resources that are not enough.
The Agricultural system is majorly dominated by small scale farmers and so only few large scale farmers operate in the land. The small scale famers use the crude Agricultural tools such as the hoes, shovels and knives to carry out their farming activities. On the other hands, even among the few large scale farmers, only the previledge ones that belong to the top Agricultiral associtions, practice mechanized farming for commercial production.

I AM A DEDICATED FARMER

Being a dedicated small scale farmer, I have some propotions of land spaces which I use to cultivate different types of crops or plants. I plant and produce different types of crops such as:

• Mellon

• Vegetable

• Cassava

• Plantain

• Ginger

• Maize
  I also do poultry farming. You might be wondering how I am able to do all these. I do my farming on a small scale level with the help of some of my friends. During the harvesting period, I settle them with some crops and cash.

I divide the harvest in three parts as follows:

• 45% Reserve For consumption

• 30% Reserve For next planting season

• 15% Reserve For sale

• 10% Reserve for charity

This is how I reward myself after the harvest season and distribute my harvest to prepare for the next planting season.

AGRICULTURAL PRODUCE ARE PROFITABLE

The fact is that Agriculture is not an easy job to do. But that being accepted, the reward or harvest worths more than the input. Every Agricultural produce have income value. There are markets for all farm produce and this makes the Agric sector very attractive to go in. By purchasing few crops for planting, the yields after harvest could generate huge profits when sold to the market. The profits will definitely compensate for expenses incured during the farming season and leave enough balance for you.
