How does climate affect agriculture in your region?
Weather is instrumental in farming in my region and district. The climate in the region is characterized by tropical maritime climate that has two season, namely the wet and dry seasons. Rainy season which runs from April to October gives water for crops and the following are more famed crops grown during the rainy season, such as cassava, maize and vegetables. But unpredictable short rains and seriously flooding delay planting or even destroy crops. Relative humidity and temperatures can also influence pest population Buildup possibly chocking yields. Moreover, climate change factors through higher temperatures and inadequate rainfall for production hence requiring measures to cope with in order to support food production and food security in the area.
Explain what vegetables are grown in your region during the winter season and about them.
In my area one of the most produced vegetables during the winter season is water leaf, scientifically called Talinum triangulare. This specific plant grows well in the tropical region and is appreciated in particular for the minerals it contains as vitamin A and C, iron and antioxidants. Waterleaf is quite a useful food seasoning often added in soups, stews and salads to soften the culinary blend and provide extra taste and environmental texture. Additionally, Tomatoes*: The tomato is widely grown horticultural crop in Nigeria and they contain normally Vitamin A and C, potassium and lycopene.
Explain about the market price of local seasonal vegetables in your area.
For example, local seasonal vegetables in my area are relatively costly according to the market price.
Since the needs of my residents are high, and the lifestyle luxurious, the prices for fresh produce leave one in awe. For example a bunch of fresh waterleaf that will sell for 500-1000 naira in other parts of lagos easily goes for 1500-2000 naira here which is 3.6 steem according to the current price. Also for instance, instead of paying ₦3000- ₦3500 for a bag of fresh tomatoes you would be charged ₦4500- ₦5000 that is about 11 to 12.2 steemes for fresh produce can be eye-watering.
Let's say for instance, a bunch of fresh waterleaf that would cost around ₦500-₦1000 in other parts of Lagos can easily go for ₦1500-₦2000 here which is equivalent to 3.6 to 4.8 steem in the current steem price.
Similarly, a bag of fresh tomatoes that would normally cost ₦3000-₦3500 might be ₦4500-₦5,000 here thats about 11 to 12.2 steem
And it’s not the vegetables, not only the prices of spices and herbs and other food ingredients, they can be extremely high.
