Hello and greetings my amiable friends and colleagues on this platform, it's another week with a beautiful and amazing contest titled: "From farmer to trade!" Organized by @edgargonzalez here in #Nature&Agriculture.
Which I will be so delighted and happy to share with you all my views and perspectives towards this contest and as well give you all some few awareness about what i plant and harvest and how it contributes to our society and nations, but before then I will like to give a brief definition and meaning on farming as stated in the contest topic.
If you are a farmer, tell me what you grow and harvest to sell in your community or wholesale, and if you are not a farmer, tell us about the harvest in your region and its trade
I am indeed a farmer who grow varieties of crops such as cassava, maize, groundnuts, yam and so on with my dad and some of my siblings, the main crop we grow and harvest and sell is cassava which is a root vegetable that underground at part of the cassava shrub, which has the Latin name "Manihot" also Known as ege (Yoruba Language), akpu (Igbo language) and rogo (Hausa language) this are the three major languages in Nigeria here.
As for the harvest aspect which i will say for the past few years now the harvest in my region has been so good and favourable to most of the farmers here due to sufficient rainfall, fertile soil and good climate conditions which supports the growth of our crop massively.
Most farmers in my area sell their farm produce to some business men who usually comes around during the time of harvest with their haulage trucks which they use to convey the goods, while some farmers prefer taking their own to the market to sell instead of giving it out to those business men to buy, though selling it in the market is more profitable because the prices is better than that of the business men but the challenges and risk involved in it is very high, stressful and transportation to the market which is very costly because of the bad load in my area that is the reason most of us sell ours to them to avoid this time wastage and other expenses.
Do you see good profit in agriculture? Is it profitable enough to support a family?
Agriculture is indeed a good and benefiting profession that's only if you know what you are doing, because it gives us the chances and opportunity of providing food for the people and making the world a happy place to live by putting smile on people's face daily after eating, it as well has a high rate of occupational sectors e.g in my country Nigerian more than 50% of the country population earns their living through agriculture that is enough reason to prove that agriculture is profitable.
Over to my family agriculture has played a vital and essential role by always providing and supporting my family in one way or the other starting from food aspect, it helps us produce food in large quantity needed to feed a growing population which in return generates alot of income, it provides us with fresh fruits and vegetables that is very good for our health, it's as well offers employment opportunities to many people both educated and uneducated ones.
How is the price of the harvest calculated? Is it better to sell wholesale or directly to the consumer? Advantages and disadvantages!
For me it's more better and preferable to sell directly to the consumer other than wholesale in the following way such as it generates and brings more income and ensures the quality of your product, packaging, and pricing is up to your standards.
Selling directly to the consumer gives you access to better understanding of the consumers needs and how they feel about your product as well as giving them your personal demonstration and explanation of your products.
It as well helps to reduce the selling price and stops the inflation of goods caused by wholesalers and retailers.
On the other hand the disadvantages of selling to the consumers includes time wastage and stress, lack of control over the sales process, it increases competition among selling which will definitely result to high level of deflation as well as devaluation of currency etc.
I have come to the end point of this contest special thanks the organizer of this amazing contest, which i will call on my fellow steemians @josepha @saintpaul17 @ahmneska to take apart as well.
