As of the time of writing this message, all Steemian members are healthy. I am also fine. The Nature and Agriculture community has started a competition which I am eagerly waiting to join. First recognition to @amjadsharif sir, who organized this competition. The aim of the competition design was to find the best yield results among the participants. So let's get started.

What crops are grown in your region?

The Rangpur region of Bangladesh is very suitable for agriculture and various types of crops are cultivated in this region. Rangpur, Nilphamari, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha, Thakurgaon and Dinajpur districts are included in this region. Farmers in this region mainly cultivate food grains, vegetables, fruits and cash crops. Boro, Aman and Aush rice are widely cultivated. Wheat cultivation is popular in the cold-weather Rangpur region. Rangpur region is one of the main potato production centers in Bangladesh.

The soil and climate of the Rangpur region are suitable for various types of agricultural products. If farmers use current generation and obtain authorities help, agricultural manufacturing in this region will boom in addition and could make a vast contribution to the united states's financial system.

What was the average yield and market price of this crop?

Potato is an important food crop in Bangladesh, which plays a special role in the country's agricultural economy. In the 2023-24 monetary yr, the country produced about 11 million lots of potatoes, which is about 3 million lots extra than the country's annual call for of 8 million lots. The average yield of potatoes is about 23 tons per hectare. However, it is possible to obtain a yield of up to 25-30 tons per hectare by using high-yielding varieties. In terms of production costs, according to the Department of Agricultural Marketing, the production cost per kilogram of potatoes in the 2022-23 season was 10 taka 51 paisa. However, the price of potatoes at the retail level may vary due to fluctuations in supply and demand in the market. For example, in December 2024, per kilogram of potatoes was sold at 60 taka or 2 steams in the retail market of the capital Dhaka.

How much did it cost to cultivate till harvest and what was the total profit from this crop?

The cost and profit of potato farming in Bangladesh can vary from region to region and over time. Overall, the total cost of potato farming per bigha of land is around 70,000 to 75,000 taka. The yield of potato per bigha of land can be 50 to 60 maunds (40 kg per maund). According to the current market price, potatoes are being sold for 2,000 to 2,200 taka per maund. Thus, the income from selling potatoes per bigha of land can be 1,00,000 to 1,20,000 taka. After deducting the cost, the net profit can be 25,000 to 50,000 taka.

My advice:

My advice for brand spanking new farmers could be—farm wisely, understand the marketplace, and observe sustainable farming strategies. If you are a new farmer, it's far better to select plants that are low-risk, without difficulty marketable, and profitable. It is important to know in advance where the agricultural produce will be sold at a good price. Many times, farmers are successful in production but face losses in marketing.

Take benefit of presidency and NGO-supported education, subsidies and agricultural loans. Maintain normal contact with the Department of Agricultural Extension, agricultural research institutions and local agricultural officials. Maintaining soil fertility, making sure ok irrigation centers, and following environmentally friendly farming strategies will be worthwhile in the long run.

As a new farmer, follow the strategy of ‘more profit with less investment.Make an effort to begin modest and work your way up to a greater scale. Take your time and continue to study about farming and the market.
