Whilst it is true that FDI in Bangladesh has boosted female employment, this positive correlation is unlikely to remain true in the near future. The factors that stand against the trend continuing are:

  • Most of these female employees are employed in the textile industries which is labor intensive. These labor intensive industries are poised to be mechanized and automated in the near future depriving these employment opportunities to females.
  • In another report  Bangladesh was ranked the third worst performing country for attracting Greenfield FDI. Greenfield FDI indicates the future trend of FDIs. Thus overall Bangladesh can expect to have declining FDIs in the future, unless it does take proactive steps to attract greenfield investments quickly.
  • ESG investing is a broader category than greenfield investing and is attracting the attention of greater number of companies and investors. In this category, the repression of civil rights and freedom of religion and beliefs, especially the repression of religious freedom of the minorities are of particular concern in Bangladesh. Read about it here and here.
