JOURNALISTS' unions and campaigners demanded the immediate release of five government critics jailed in Iraqi Kurdistan today after what was branded a politically motivated show trial.

Reporters Sherwan Sherwani, Guhdar Zebari and Ayaz Karam and activists Shvan Saeed Omar and Hariwan Issa were sentenced to six years behind bars on charges of undermining the independence, unity, or security of the country.
