The Copyleft, a new STEEM COMMUNITY and re-introducing the Solar Art Archive

The Solar Art Archive has grown out of my love for curating, and my artistic needs for gathering collage materials. I also find the search for art to be inspiring and relaxing. I figured that if I'm spending all this time amassing a collection of high resolution, full quality copies of amazing artwork and useful material, that there is no reason i shouldn't be sharing it.

This is a project I started a year and a half ago utilizing a P2P media hosting application called LBRY. After some experimenting at the time I found LBRY to be a bit too clunky and gave up out of frustration, but times have changed. LBRY has come a long way since those days, and now I find it a joy to use. I've begun publishing a collection of files on LBRY that can be accessed here If you are interested in LBRY, please consider supporting the Solar Art Archive and creating an account and using my referral link which will give both you and me a small amount of the LBC token.

For this project I'm aiming to uphold the ideals of the "copyleft" movement. This means that even though most of the content that I post will be public domain, as much as possible I will be linking the artist, and even the original archives where I found the materials.

I wanted to introduce the idea of copyleft to the STEEM community for those who haven't heard of it (From Wikipedia):

Copyleft, distinguished from copyright, is the practice of offering people the right to freely distribute copies and modified versions of a work with the stipulation that the same rights be preserved in derivative works created later.[1] Copyleft software licenses are considered protective or reciprocal, as contrasted with permissive free-software licenses.[2] The underlying principle is that one benefits freely from the work of others, but any modifications one makes public must be released under similar terms. For this reason some copyleft licenses are also known as reciprocal licenses, they have also been described as "viral" due to their self-perpetuating terms.

Introducing the Beyond Copyright Community

I think the sharing of art and materials outside of copyright is very powerful, pushing for a culture of ideas that is more open and accessible to all people. When i was young it was the age of Napster, Kazzaa and BitTorrent. Piracy and stealing had become cool but while it might have been partly about a big F-YOU to media giants, It was the access and exposure to ideas I might never have had access to otherwise which was liberating.

If you'd like to join in the sharing you can find this new Steem Community here focused on the sharing of art materials free for all.

Enjoy this collection of beautiful lithographs by Louis Haghe from his travels to Egypt and Nubia, if you'd like a closer look, or would like to re-purpose this material (this is public domain, so you can do what ever you want with it!) click the link below the image for a high quality TIFF (here is the link for the cover photo of the sphinx).

Really great idea! As a collage artist myself i ve" trained" myself to find uncopyrighted material to use in my artworks, i will try to make a post in the future and share some:)

Awesome @georgeboya great to hear from you. Knowing your work i'm sure you have some awesome stuff to share.

Are you posting on HIVE as well?

I cannot say that i have the rarest material ever, lol. Most of them are rather common photos but i will try to deconstruct one of my artworks and present all of the source material.

No, i am not posting at HIVE.

cool would love to see what you come up with. I made you a mod (no pressure). Mostly if you find this community useful and see someone obviously spamming, you have the power to mute them!
