Snail farming

Snail farming is simply known as the rearing of snails either for consumption or for marketing. Over the years now this type of agricultural practice has gain popularity over the years and it is also considered as a delicacy in some cultures. Also this farming practice is also called heliciculture.

Types of Snails for Farming

Snail farming has many types of farming and this includes

1. Archachatina Marginata

This type of snails are called the giant of Africa and are well known for their length ,also they can grow up to 20 centimeters in length and they can live for eight to ten years. Also they are rich in protein and have low fat in them. Also this snails are called hermaphrodites which is they posses both the male and female organs of reproduction and they can lay up to 4 to 10 eggs at a time. And their eggs can hatch in period of 21 to 30 days .

. Achatina Achatina

This type of snails are often found in Ghana and there are a very popular species in terms of snail farming. There are known for their impressive sizes and they can produce high amounts of eggs. This means that they can lay up to 200 to 400 or more per clutch and also this species are attractive in terms of farming.

. Achatina Fulica

This snails are known as the eastern giant snail. They are not too small in size but are still regarded as one of the widely farmed snail in snail farming because it is easy to care for them. This type of snails are often found around human habitats and can also lay up to 200 to 500 eggs per clutch.

Snail 🐌 Feeding Habits

Snails are known to be herbivorous creatures because their daily diet are mainly vegetables and plants. Their way of feeding play a crucial role in their health, growth and their life span.

1. Leafy plants:

Snails are known for always eating leaves of trees and eating vegetables.

1. Fruits Snails eat fruits for their health to improve and they eat fruits like banana, pawpaw and many others.

Also another which they eat is potato leaves.

Feeding Frequency
Snails should be fed based on their age because you gee and upcoming snails should be fed properly because of their growth and the older snails can be fed not regularly like the younger ones.

Habitat Requirements

Snail farmers are expected to build good habitats which has loamy soil in it and also the temperature should be warm and good for the snails health .

Treatment of snails should be done regularly because this kind of animals can catch diseases from the soil which they live on and they can get infected or may even die if not treated. In treating snails most people prefer to take them to a snail doctor who can run test and check if they are alright.

If a person wants to embark on snail farming he or she should have a good amount of money because snail farming is another part of investment. Because you can get a 10x of what you invested.
