What are the most commonly cultured fish species (e.g., salmon, tilapia, shrimp)? Write in your own words.

Fish farming in Bangladesh is a key industry for the source of food, nutrition. It is also supports the economy. The country's ponds and rivers are farmed for many types of fish. The most common being Rui, Katla, Mrigal, Pangas, Tilapia and Shrimp. The three traditional fishes in Bangladesh among these which are widely farmed are Rui, Katla and Mrigal because they are cheaper and give better profit. Most of these fish are raised in rural areas and are very important in the daily diet of the peoples of Bangladesh.

Pangas

Another Fish in bangladesh grows more is pangas. In different areas of bangladesh because it farms quite fast and the costs of farming are very low. In the same way, Tilapia also grows fast, doesn’t need special feed, and it is suitable for small and medium sized farmers.

Farming coldwater fish like Salmon is difficult in Bangladesh because cold water is required by cold water fish which is not available in most of Bangladesh’s water bodies. Various saltwater shrimp farming is a very popular undertaking in the coastal areas of Bangladesh, and is an integral part of the country's fish export industry.

How do different species requirements impact aquaculture operations (e.g., water temperature, feed)? Explain with examples.

Mixed FishIMG_20241017_072259_24.jpg

Each type of fish in Bangladesh has unique environmental needs that govern fish farming and how much the farmers can make in profit.

The water temperature is one of the most important factors. Salmon, for instance, needs cold water and in Bangladesh warm water is available everywhere hence it is impossible to farm Salmon there. Tilapia, Rui-Katla, and Mrigal fish grow well in warm water common in Bangladesh and so are easy to raise.

They are also important to provide food requirements. Pangas & Tilapia fish will grow on less nutritious food. It takes less time to grow them, thus they are profitable to small & medium farmers. Rui, Katla, and Mrigal need high protein food however the same could be quite expensive. So large scale farmers will farm these species more.

Fish farming is also dependent on water quality very much. Every fish has different water conditions it need. Such as water temperature, oxygen levels, and amout of salt in the water. Tilapia can live in some very polluted water, but Salmon needs clean, oxygen rich water. Water pollution poses a problem for farming fish in many parts of Bangladesh.

What are the challenges and opportunities in culturing non-traditional species (e.g., seaweed, shellfish)?

Farming non‑traditional species like seaweed and shellfish is an opportunity as well as challenge in Bangladesh.

Seaweed

Seaweed has to be farmed under very special conditions and technology. But it would take a lot of knowledge and expertise, and some coastal areas of Bangladesh could prove good for farming seaweed. Seaweed used in healthy food, cosmetics, biotechnology and medicine. Seaweed farming could become a new profitable export market if it successful in Bangladesh.

Shellfish

Farming shellfish such as oysters, clams and shrimp, also requires the right water temperature, salt levels and food. Although, technology and farming techniques are not very advanced yet. Bangladesh’s coastal areas could be good for shellfish farms. As demand for shellfish rises, farming them successfully is becoming important.

Farming these species has challenges, but if it works, it could create new possibilities for Bangladesh's fish farming industry, and generate revenue through exports of seaweed and shellfish.

Manusia memiliki keterbatasan pemahaman.

MODs Comment/Recommendation:

It's good to learn a new information from you today. I knew Bangladesh has so many types of fishes but didn't know it's for making money over there. Although fish business is very lucrative and we also do it in my country but we are not so dependent on it for survival. I wish you all the best!
