◉ What are some of the biggest challenges faced by farmers today?

There are a lot of challenges faced by the farmers of this generation, and the challenges are as follows.

1. Constant drought, low rainfall, and floods in a particular area of land or place are some of the big challenges faced by farmers. This causes the farmers to engage in irrigation systems.

2. Whenever farmers grow crops, crops also experience extreme temperatures and weather conditions that are not suitable for plants; this has been the yearly challenge of farms, and this then damages food security and makes the production of crops less, leading to hunger and starvation.

3. We all know that farmers require agricultural implements to cultivate crops, and the constant increase in their purchase is a big challenge faced by farmers; due to inflation in the price of working implements and fertilizer, farmers find it difficult to increase crop production.

4. Farmers also face a challenge that is due to the soil losing its fertility because it has been overused, which then reduces crop yield. If the soil loses its fertility, the farmer will be discouraged from continuing the farming process.

5. In the aspect of agriculture, farmers are likely to face this problem of pests and diseases, which adds to the low production of crops. The frequent attack of crops by pests and diseases has been a result of climate change in a particular geographical area.

Climate change as well, now has a lot of positive impacts on the productivity of agriculture.

1. Climate usually leads to more extreme weather conditions, like drought, flooding,g, and heat waves 🌊 which can cause soil degradation and low crop yield.

2. Whenever climate change takes action, it leads to a longer dry season and then causes water scarcity.

3. The rising temperature that is causing the planting season to shift will make some crops not have the capacity to grow again.

4. Climate change can change the relationship between pests, plants, and pathogens.

5. Livestock are usually at risk from heat stress and reduced quality of their food supply.

6. Due to climate change, the temperature of water is increasing at a high rate, which will limit the lifestyle of certain fish species.

◉ What innovations or technologies are emerging to help farmers address these challenges?

• Artificial intelligence: an image-based pattern recognition system can help plants gain more nutrients and water. For instance, AI designed sprayer can be programmed to recognize certain weeds.

• Farm automation: computer systems, agriculture machinery, electronics, and chemical sensors to help decision-making and expand farming operations.

• Genetic engineering: DNA sequencing and gene editing technologies, which can help in the production of some varieties of crops. This will aid crops to adapt to different climatic conditions.
