Basic Knowledge in Agriculture #3

Hello friends and fellow agriculturists, it's good to be here. I'm @destinedhanik from Nigeria. I want to talk on my basic knowledge of agriculture. The fact is that, agriculture has come to stay and at least one person in every household is now farming and it's very necessary to have a basic knowledge in agriculture. Apart from the money gotten from selling agricultural products, agriculture is a means of getting food produce and resources. Crop propagation means increasing or multiplying crop plants. Here, new plants are grown from various sources, ranging from cuttings, seeds and other plant parts like stem or leaves. It is the multiplying of crop plants from old or existing ones.

In crop propagation, plants are cultivated extensively to provide food, or to use as a source of medicine or for other purposes.

Crop propagation by seed also known as sexual propagation:
In this type of propagation, seeds are used. There will be fusion or union, that is joining together of the male and female sex reproductive cells usually from two reproductive parent plants. The seeds will develop, mature and dry up. Example of crops with sexual propagation is maize, pepper, watermelon, tomato, beans, nuts, apples, etc.

Crop propagation by vegetative organs also known as asexual propagation : This type of propagation involves reproduction from the vegetative parts of plants since these parts can regenerate or grow again. When we use part of a plant other than it's seed to produce more types of the same plant, it is called vegetative or asexual propagation. An example is the cassava. After the cassava is harvested by being dug out of if the ground and the tuber used, the stems are cut into pieces and stuck into ground at the beginning of a new planting season to propagate cassava. Also, sugar cane can be propagated this way. Onions and garlic use asexual reproduction, potato, yams, etc.

Crop propagation has its advantages.

• New crops are produced which look exactly like the original parent plants.

• Through crop propagation, there is no lack of crops but the process of producing crops continues making food and other resources available for use by man and animals.

• It doesn't leave room for extinction of plants.

• The process of propagation allows for large number of plants to grow in a short interval especially in it's season.

• Crop propagation is resistant to diseases and pests.

• Crop propagation can withstand adverse soil and weather conditions.

Seed propagation: Here, plants are grown from seed produced through fertilization example pepper, onion, cabbage, tomato, etc.

Cutting: where a portion of the plant is cut and planted to grow into a new plant example sweet potatoes and cassava.
