Introduction

Before now, when one is told to go into the field of studying Agriculture in the higher institution, they will run, rejecting it. They forget, or maybe they are ignorant of the fact that agriculture is not just about farming. However, agriculture is not just about cultivation and harvesting of crops or rearing of animals. It involves a lot.

Define the term "agricultural economics" Be detailed enough.

Agriculture economics is a field of agriculture that studies how agricultural products are grown, processed, developed, produced and marketed. It also involves how goods are produced, distributed, transported and how they are being consumed.

What is subsistence farming? And when did the farming began?

Subsistence farming has to do with the production of food or farm products that are meant for the consumption of the farmer alone. In this system of farming, the farmer only grows crops or rears animals just for the consumption of his family members. That is to say that the farm product is just sufficient for the family, it's not surplus, it's not for sale either.

As a historian, through my knowledge of economic history of ancient societies, especially in Africa. Subsistence farming is as old as humankind. From the beginning of time when man came to the knowledge of agriculture, he began producing crops and rearing animals for his personal consumption.

In what ways can we improve agriculture in our society?

There are many ways to improve agriculture in our society, especially in a time like this.

  1. Improvement of the soil by proper use and developing or improving fertilisers that will improve soil quality.
  2. Research and development of high yield crops/seeds.
  3. The use of modern machines/equipment in the agricultural sector will enhance the production of food in the sector.
  4. Proper management/mitigation of the negative effects of climate can go a long way to managing disasters that may affect agriculture.
  5. Proper education of farmers on new farming systems, products and application can also improve agriculture in our society.

Explain the life cycle of a bean plant.

If there's any plant I know its life cycle, it is beans. Growing up as a young child, we were usually in the habit of planting seeds. There wasn't any at my disposal I didn't plant, such that my grandparents would always uproot some and throw them away.

For beans, it was one of the common plants we used to plant and watch them grow. The life cycle of beans is as follows:

  1. From planting of seeds in the soil
  2. Germination/sprouting of roots of the plant
  3. Seedling: growing of cotyledons (first leaves)
  4. Flowering: this is the point where the plant begins to grow flowers after it has grown leaves.
  5. Fruiting: this is where the flowers of the plant begin to form seeds.
  6. Maturity: At maturity, the bean seeds are properly developed. When it's dried, it is ready to be harvested.
