Starting a garden is a hobby that is enjoyable and rewarding. Gardening connects us to nature and provides us with fresh and beautiful flowers. you can start with a small backyard or a balcony with little effort but using the right approach.

Before starting a garden, you have to select a good spot, before you choose you must use the whole day to observe the area that is the sunniest. Most vegetables and flowers require at least six hours of sunlight each day. you have to ensure that the area you have chosen has good drainage to prevent water from surrounding the plant so that it doesn't lead to root rot. If you decide to use containers or raised beds then you must have good drainage holes.

Decide What to Grow

Before you start planting you should check your climate, available space, and if you can grow the plants you prefer with the resources available.

Some of the best plants to start with are;
Vegetables like tomatoes, lettuce, peppers and carrots, these vegetables are easy to grow and maintain.

if you have lesser amount of space and want to grow herbs, you can start with basil, mint, rosemary, and cilantro,these plants can be grown both indoor and outdoor because they consume less space.

Flowers like marigolds, sunflowers, petunias, and zinnias attract pollinators like bees and butterflies to make the garden even more beautiful.

Prepare the Soil

Healthy soil is a good foundation for plants to grow well.
To start you have to remove weeds using a rake and a shovel. Add organic compost, manure to improve soil structure and provide essential nutrients. For container gardening you must use high-quality potting mix rather than normal garden soil.

Planting Seeds or Seedlings

Dig a deep hole to insert the roots and cover it with soil and water it immediately to help the plant establish itself.When planting in the garden you have to follow spacing instructions on the packet of the seed or plant label. Plants like carrots and lettuce grow well when planted as seeds, while others plants like tomatoes and peppers grow better as seedlings.

Proper watering of the plants is essential for it's health. Water the plants early in the morning or late in the afternoon to reduce evaporation. Most plants require about one inch of water per week, but you have to check the soil regularly and if it is dry an inch below the surface then it’s time to water. Adding mulch around plants helps to retain it's moisture and reduce weeds.

Protecting Your Garden

Gardens can attract pests like aphids and caterpillars. Checking plants regularly and removing pests by hand or using natural solutions like neem oil is a way to protect the garden. Weeds usually compete for nutrients, once they appear you have to remove them immediately. Use stakes and cages for taller plants such as tomatoes to provide support.

Harvest and Enjoy

Harvest vegetables and plants when they are ripe and mature to ensure the best flavor and continuous production. Regularly picking flowers increases blooms. If you wish to continue in the next season keep a garden journal to note what works and what doesn’t work and other activities going on in the garden, this can help improve your gardening skills for the next seasons.

Start with few easy plants before expanding, select plants that matches to your climate and have patience because gardening takes time but has good rewards.
