Over the years, agriculture has proven to be part of human life because it provides a means of sustenance. We indulge in different agricultural activities for survival or commercial purposes, and we are not wrong if we say agriculture is life. Planting is not just an agricultural activity but a major activity. We plant crops, vegetables, etc for our consumption. But have we thought of planting economic trees, such as the palm tree? In this post, I will be writing about the economic importance of palm FRUIT.

Palm fruit is an economic tree majorly found in Africa. It is a perennial plant with the name "Elaies guineensis". The plant stands the test of time, and it's good for human consumption. Various parts of the fruit can be used to produce different products like; oil and cream for human use. The following are the reasons palm fruits are economic trees;

• WE USED PALM FRUIT TO PRODUCE PALM OIL: Palm fruits are used for the production of palm oil, a saturated oil used for cooking, and the majority used Palm Oil to cook soup and other foods like rice, etc. We don't only use Palm oil from palm fruit for cooking, but we can use it as biofuel. This product from palm fruit makes it an economic tree. The demand for its products is high, and merchants import and export this produce.

• WE USED IN THE PRODUCTION OF CREAM: Palm kernels from palm fruits are used for the production of body cream. Oil is extracted from the kernel and used in cream production. For this reason, merchants go around to purchase this kernel and sale for cream production companies. Palm kernel is edible, and we can consume it for protein. It can even be used for the generation of electricity in mills.

• THE CHAFF AND SHELL OF THE KERNEL ARE USED AS FUEL: Bread production companies that use manual ovens for production purchase the chaff from palm fruits and the shell of palm kernel and use them for igniting a fire.

As seen earlier in this post, palm fruit can be used in the production of oil, cream, and biofuel. We can even eat it, and these make it an economic tree. Let's take a look at some of its importance in society.

• MEANS OF LIVELIHOOD: The majority venture into palm oil processing, and this puts food on their table. For example, in Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria, the majority of citizens in the villages produce palm oil. They sell this oil to merchants from the city who would export it to cities in the country, and even outside the country, and they are fed from the money.

• COMMERCE: Companies who venture into cream production export their goods, and even sell within the country. This commercial activity boosts the economy of a nation. Remember some of the cream are produced from the palm kernel. The merchant sells the oil within and outside the country, which, in effect, boosts the economy. Biofuel is the most expensive fuel, and if they are produced from palm fruit, it invariably boosts the economy.

• FOOD: Palm fruits are edibles, and can be eaten. It is enriched with vitamins such as E. We can eat the fruits and even the kernel.

In some parts of Africa, for example, in Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria, people plant palm fruits, process the oil, and sell it for their livelihood. The tree enhances economic activities, which in turn boosts the economy of the nation.
