Greetings great steemians welcome to SEC:S20/W3 in this contest contest i will be sharing ideas on how to identify pest and how to eliminate then in our crops.
When you visited the crop field, what pests did you observe there? How did you identify that it was a pest?
Am a farmer i own a large corn and okra farm (lady fingers) my crops has many insects thats feed on thier leafs.
My corn field is mainly attacked by insects and rodent grass chopper pricisely.
Grasshopper will feed on the young leafs terribly that the crop might not survive or even yield and good fruits.
Grasshopper usually feeds on corn leafs, silk and ear tips
When i saw the damage on my corn leave i knew it was grasshopper. Because it appears round to ragged holes in the leaf.
Which pesticides do you think are suitable for controlling the pests you observed in the field? Please express your own opinion. (Note: For your convenience, the names of the pesticide groups are mentioned above.)
I use a chemical called sharp shooter to cast them out of my crops.
I measure 1ML of the chemical and pour into a 10 liters water i sprey it evenly, i continue this at two 4 days interval , i do this as soon as i noticed my crops were attack by grasshopper because failure to take immediate effect is dangerous. Grasshopper can destroy a whole plantation in less than a week.
Describe the method of trapping insects by creating a pest trap using various natural materials (such as containers, adhesive substances).
In many cases chemicals are used for fast results but incase chemical is not available this method can be applied.
In a see through jar bore a hole in the lid big enough for the insect to pass through.
Add bread, apple or anything that could lure the insect into the jar. Grasshopper parade's in colony seeing others feeding in the jar will attract the other. Because of the little passage the can only go in but will be difficult to come out.
Discuss in detail which crops you think the use of bio-chemicals is beneficial and cost-effective.
The use of biochemicals is very helpful for most of the crops it is cost effective as well, but i will choose okra (lady fingers) some crops can be badly damage by chemicals and cause alot of lost to the farmer okra for example, biochemicals can also be applied on tomatoes and fruit.
Make a chart of which pesticide are used for which pest in your area and discuss with us. Special note: if not aware of this a permanent farma or anyone involved in agriculture can take help.
Pesticide | pest |
---|---|
Sharp shooter | grasshopper caterpillars and leaf miners |
Uproot | weeds |
Uproot is a chemical used to eradicate weeds. This crops are mostly cassava, maize and okra. This chemical is applied after the first weeding as this will the allow the weeds to affect the yielding process of the crop.
I will love to invite @chant @dequeen @blessedbee to participate in this contest.
Welcome to the agro-learning challenge season 20.
Observations and suggestions:
I agree with your choice of views concerning the use of biochemical and its cost-effectiveness. However stating how it is beneficial would be ideal. Biochemical aligns to the fact of handling not only pest prevalence, but also sees to the management of nutrients over time and improves crop yield over time. Generally, you have done well with your submission.
Thank you for your participation. We hope to see you in week 4.

You are posting it based on your experience, this pest are really destroying crops but then there is always a way of protecting the crops from the pest.
The use of chemicals is really helpful, thank you for sharing your knowledge about this topic, wishing you success 👍
