What is aquaculture, and how does it differ from traditional fisheries?
Aquaculture refers to the study and production of fish shrimps and other aquatic food organisms under scientifically controlled conditions in enclosed bodies of water such as ponds , streams , rivers etc.
It differs from traditional fisheries because traditional fisheries deals with fishing , catching , processing and marketing of fish or sea food.
what are you benefit and drawback of aquaculture?
.1.: it provides fish which serves as a source of food e.g protein to man and also provides employment and income to many people.
Some people engage into aquaculture as their carrier on occupation for a living while the fish and other produce sold to provide income.
.2. : it can generate foreign exchange to a nation, this is when fish are exported to others countries, fish can be processed into fish by product such as fish meal , fish oil manure and skin.
.3. : improved nutrition: because it is rich in protein and omega 3 fatty acid and it also nurished the skin it has a good oil.
The drawbacks of aquaculture:
Environmental impact :Aquaculture Can Damage Local Gene Pools · Antibiotics And Chemicals Are Often Used In Aquaculture ,such as water pollution , habitat destruction·
High energy cost : the cost of maintenance is very high, it requires a lot of resources ,in pumping water and In maintaining water quality.
How does aquaculture contributes to global food security?
Aquaculture and fisheries not only provide high quality protein to billions of people, but also help to preserve aquatic ecosystem.
Year-round production : this means that the product will be available through out the year, always producing regardless of season.
Rich in protein production : yes it's high in Protein because it contains a fatty omega 3 oil Aquaculture is also one of the world's most efficient and sustainable methods to produce high-quality protein.
Local food system: it can contribute to local food by providing a fresh and nutrients food to the local market .
what are the key factors influencing aquaculture production?
Biological factor
Genetics: this is the quality of the farmer species to know whether it is fertile and can impact a good produce.
Climate: climate change can affect the temperature and the weather in either positive or negative way it will affect the aquaculture production.
Water supply: a good amount of water that is sufficient and quality will be good because the fishes needs good amount of water to live well.
