"SLC21/WK1: Empowering Life-Saving Skills: A Guide to First Response and Basic First Aid"

in hive-118902 •  5 days ago  (edited)

Hello friends!
Welcome to another session in the ongoing SLC season 21. This is another interesting and practical knowledge we have to demonstrate no matter how we tend to represent it in real-life situations. Both first responders and first aiders are life saviors in emergencies. Let's get on the deal.

Share your any experience of your life, in which you faced an emergency that could be handled on your own only if you know the basic first response skills. (2 marks)

I remember going out to buy something from the street one blessed weekend, and I was faced with a situation that got me worried. It is more of like a medical and as well psychiatric emergency. But what do I know more than to handle this situation before me?

A lady which we later knew her medical condition gradually tilted to the ground as if she was slumping and started coughing and vomiting foam-like substances from her mouth. I was confused at first sight as I tried to decode what was going on. Just in my gaze, her mom pushed her into her shop.

I didn't know what else to do, but just quickly enough, her mom started removing all the sharp objects around her as she was jerking. She also tried to keep her calm during this nervousness while staying away from passersby. She did so many other things to stem the crises. It was then I knew this was an epileptic crisis.

During this period, it was obvious that she was endangered and could probably fall into fire or objects capable of maiming her, but her mom was already close and pushed her away from those and isolated her quickly. In contrast, if that wasn't done, she would have fallen into the gutters and probably hit her skull against the pavements.

As a first responder here, it is obvious that saving her was imminent and this was to notably apply DRABC with "Danger and Response" prioritized in this case. Taking her out from sharp and dangerous terrain was ideal, to avoid more harm at that moment of jerking. Her responses are there, but they should be stabilized by holding her firmly to restore calmness.

Imagine you are walking back home, when you witness a road traffic accident between a car and a motorcycle, and the motorcyclist is lying on the road, not moving. There’s some bleeding from his leg, and he appears to be unconscious. You being the first responder, how will you manage this scenario? (1.5 marks)

As a first responder in this scenario, I have quickly noted that my life also matters. I would have to prioritize the safety of myself and everyone around me by making sure I attend to the man lying on the ground in a safer place. This would be done by removing every life-threatening object around, maybe broken glasses or motorbike/car parts damaged during this collision.

While I tap on his shoulders or face to see if he's responsive and if not, I should quickly do CPR on him immediately to revive or restore consciousness. I can call for bandages from the bystanders while carrying out CPR; this is to allow me to reduce bleeding from the leg to avoid loss of excess blood from the body already under shock.

I should quickly check for his airways to be sure it is clear. I should tilt his head and chin a little backward while performing my CPR. The essence of ensuring smooth airways is for respiratory efficiency in case there are blood clots or object blockage during an accident. Adjusting the head and chin would allow for air passage.

In my country, the situation is usually a unique one. Calling an ambulance may be a tall order; however, there are situations where good samaritans provide their vehicles for the onward conveyance of victims to the closest hospital for treatment. In most cases, there wouldn't be time to perform all the DRABC systematic methods in a row. However, we see situations where victims are taken to the hospital before the Airways, Breathing, and Circulation paths.

Draw or Create an engaging illustration/flowchart of DRABC protocol (Try to be creative and don't forget to add your username on the illustration) (2.5 marks)
