Agricultural By-Products and Their Importance for Humans

Agricultural by-products are materials or results produced from primary agricultural activities other than primary products such as grains, fruits, or vegetables. Although often considered waste, these by-products have important economic, environmental, and social value if managed properly. Here are five examples of commonly found agricultural by-products:

Rice Straw
Straw is the remains of rice plants left after harvest. This product is often used as animal feed, mulch to suppress weeds, or raw materials for making compost. In addition, straw is also used as bioenergy fuel or raw material in the paper industry.
Rice Husk
Husk is the outer skin of rice grains that is removed during the milling process. It can be used as a planting medium, bioenergy fuel or can be processed into rice husk ash to amend soil.
Bagasse
Bagasse is the waste left over after the extraction of sugar in sugar cane. Sugar factories use this for production of animal feed, paper or fuel.
Bagasse is also used in making compost.
Corn Cobs
Cobs are the inner part of corn that remains after the kernels are removed. These cobs are often used as alternative fuels, raw materials for making activated carbon, or for the production of animal feed.
Peanut Shells
Peanut shells are generally treated as waste, they can make into animal feed, compost material or used in briquetting for energy.

The by-products are of course crucial, as they allow the sustainability of agricultural sector and reduction of waste and thus new economic streams. They are also useful for human basics, in the fields of energy, food and industry. By-product management is also seen as an important tool in conserving the environment and providing farmers more income. That is why the use of agricultural by-products generates economic effects and at the same time allows natural resources sustainability.
