Hope has been approached and conceptualized from different areas: philosophy, theology, etc., and different elements have been given in its conceptualization. From psychology, hope has been defined as an emotion, and also as a mental and motivational state. Even more recently, from positive psychology as a strength of character or positive personality trait.

Hope, according to this model, is a cognitive trait, a mentality that allows us to set goals in our lives (professional, personal, health, etc.); together with the ability to establish the routes or steps to achieve these objectives (route-generating thinking) and the ability to maintain motivating thinking (agency thinking) that allows me to start and persist in achieving them despite obstacles and difficulties in reaching them.

Hope is more necessary the more important the goal is for the person and the more difficult it is to achieve. The objectives have to be personal, that is, they have to be truly intrinsic that the person really wants, not imposed objectives or that the person believes that he or she is obliged to fulfill, and also, they have to be realistic.
