THE THEOLOGICAL WORD for depression is despair Depression is a medical word .it denotes a well defined psychological state with a recognizable list of symptoms it also presents physical symptoms, another sad list. Several statement summarize the pain: "I would rather die than suffer this pain. "I can't stand to be with other people." I never want to leave my room or even my bed 🛏️"
As severe as these desperate feelings are, the spiritual void of despair can be even worse because it attacks us in our deepest spiritual roots. It means a total lack of hope, and hope is the magnet that draws us all to happiness. Perhaps with exaggeration , despair has been called the unforgivable sin. I don't think that any sin is unforgivable, but despair is difficult because it is so hard to forgive ourselves. The flow of God's compassion is infinite, but even it is compromised when we can't allow his soothing grace into our hearts.
Depression and despair will both go away. The gray walls will fall down. In the meantime our love can help those who suffer.
