When my wife, Roselind and I visited Perth, our first stop was Fremantle. We were lucky that our good friends Kester and Jackie was able to drive to Fremantle from Perth. They picked us from the airport, dropped us at the hotel and off we went to Fremantle.

Fremantle, Western Australia's port city, is part of the Perth metropolitan area. It's famed for its maritime heritage, Victorian architecture, and relics from Australia's former status as a British prison colony.

The re-created cellblocks of Fremantle Prison, which housed convicts from the 1850s to 1991, are now open to the public. The 12-sided Round House, a historic 1831 structure, also served as a jail for a time.

Fremantle is well-known for its fish and chips. This was what we ate for lunch. This is for four people.

The Shipwreck Galleries of the Western Australian Museum allow visitors of all ages to explore 100 years of exploration. Hundreds of antiques, including actual timbers from the Batavia, a shipwrecked in 1629, and antiquities from many wrecked Dutch ships, are housed in this museum. This museum has become the Southern Hemisphere's leading maritime archaeology museum, housed in a refurbished Commissariat building from the 1850s.
